If the father completed the game, then why weren't he and his family rich?
Maybe I missed something when he explained it. Did he say he couldn't handle it as in "handle all the money/depression of murdering the mother" and ended up spending his millions? The dad completed the final task of killing a relative (his wife) so why didn't he get any money from it.

I remember him saying the "game had changed" but thought he just meant the contestants were clowns, like his sons.

Watch again. He told Elliot to find something he'd be good at, and that by his age, the father was so rich, it took a few decades of wasting for him to waste it all.

Yeah I missed the first couple minutes to a noisy house and rather than going back wrote it off as "prolly family issues but its the first couple minutes, so isn't really important probably."

I doubt you saw the beginning. At the beginning, the Father clearly rubs it in Elliot's face that he was 10x the man he was at his age and was filthy rich.

so were they only rich before the Crash

was confuse why the Dad needed to be in the game, thought he had his own buisness and his money was lost after the crash.

Somehow....don't know how...his father figured out he was playing the game and knew that his son would have to kill a family member. By slashing his own throat he stole this option from his son. I am thinking that the father didn't think his son had it in him to kill his mentally handicapped brother. And he might have been right as I don't think he wanted to kill him, but did out of fear of being killed himself.

Kids said on the movie something like "dad only got angry after noon died" and also it's mentioned the money came after the mom died. They were not rich before the death of there mom
