Was the bully who got his arm sawed off also a contestant?

They never explained why the bully was so willing and eager to let him saw off his arm. I thought maybe it was because he was also a contestant for a separate game and chopping off his arm was one of the tasks. Anyone have ideas?

well, the overall concept in the remake doesn't really make sense, but all the tasks shown have in common that the player has to do something actively, not have something done to him. therefore it can't. if i would have to make something up, i would say that the masters of the game manipulated his life into a desperate state and offered him the money he needed if he would agree to the procedure.

But one of the challenges was just to surrender to the police, which is a rather passive thing to do...

Anyhow, to the op, he clearly asked the guy if he is willing to have his hand cut off and the guy says "yes". Then he asks him if he is being paid and the guy nods.

reply

The bully was getting paid for getting his arm cut off, but they never said if he was a full-fledged "contestant".

reply

The bikers said they were getting paid to drive down that street. I figured he just got paid a lot more.

reply

The bikers are what made me think that there were multiple games running at the same time. The lead biker was a new contestant in his own game, the first challenge being drive down the street with his pals. So I imagine the bully was also a contestant in a separate game (the cutting off own arm challenge was probably a #12 or #13). The organizers just linked all the games together at different stages so that each contestant would be unknowingly part of someone else's challenge. That's my guess but would like to hear other ideas.

reply

That was my take on it, as well.

reply

They wouldn't kill off the contestant then, would they?

reply

No because the biker says "easiest hundred bucks I ever made is there anything else WE can do for you."

I think they are just pawns in the game.

Plus doesn't make much sense to kill off your contestants.

reply

Seemingly enough, even Elliot was a part of someone else's game. His brothers. Interesting.

It was revealed when he was driving to the hospital that he got the car and jacket in exchange for getting his arm sawed off.

reply

He did not give his arm up for a jacket. Are you stupid?

reply

..did we all see different cuts or do people just not listen?

He asked if he agreed to get his arm cut off. The guy said yes. He immediately said "They're paying you." They then cut to the bully strapped to the table.

The car and jacket were not payment for his *beep* arm. The guy said he was doing well for himself - and most likely went into debt paying for cars, jackets and crap like that that was above his actual means.

reply

They (the game) paid the bully. He mentioned that he had money troubles.

reply

That was my take on it as well. They're just pawns...different compensation for different levels of work one must put into someone else's game. They don't know why they're doing it, though, except to make money. The bully asked Elliott if this was like his fetish or fantasy or something, implying he thought maybe Elliott got sexually aroused by dismembering others, and that he might have thought Elliott had this arranged. It seems like, when the bikers answered the call and made the comment about easiest $100 ever, they were probably offered $100 more (or even more money) to do the ride again, going back the other way, again, not knowing they were part of a game. To me, Michael's involvement in the game was pretty evident the moment he was wanted for exposing himself.

reply

As everyone else already explained, the severed-arm man and bikers were just pawns. If you notice, the players of the game (the old man in the beginning, Elliot, and Elliot's brother) all have the same special ringtone. The bikers, on the other hand, had no ringtone. Thus, they were not players.
