Near the end of the movie,
What did Eric give to Nagase that made him break down in tears?

I assumed it was a letter, the one that he was narrating via voice-over at the time.

Yes, it was a letter of reply. It seems they started to correspond in real life, but the movie ends.

I imagine the book continues past that point.

Yes, in reality they corresponded by letter before actually meeting for the first time, the surprise first meeting did not actually take place as depicted in the film.
