Truly Shocking!
I just started episode 2. This is some seriously sick shit! It's sad and confounding what people can be talked into.
What a psychopath Warren Jeffs is!

No, it's been known for a long time that there are some real horrors going on in the small towns of Utah, including wide-scale welfare abuse, abandonment of boys, forced marriages, intra-family marriages, other absolute horrors. The Utah authorities do nothing, because the Mormons are a power in the state, and they don't want the authorities do anything that would make Mormonism look bad.
And has the show gotten into the widespread welfare abuse? Because yes, the biggest sect of welfare cheats in the country are these white Mormon polygamists, the 2nd-10th wives aren't married in the eyes of the law, so they file for welfare and these huge sick families are actually being supported by hard-working taxpayers!
Oh I believe you. They haven't mentioned welfare abuse yet, don't know if that will come up later in the program.
The show is focusing on the FLDS, which is totally separate from mainstream Mormons. Polygamy was outlawed by mainstream Mormons like 100 years ago, although I'm sure it still goes on to some extent. These FLDS people are insane!!
Oh, I don't think that the FLDS is all that separate from the mainstream Mormons, not separate enough that the mainstream Mormons running the state are willing to do diddly-squat about their widespread welfare fraud or ingrained patterns of child abuse!
I wonder if the show will cover that...
Are you talking about mainstream Mormons? I didn't think it was a widespread as that. I think the polygamists are an embarrassment to mainstream Mormons because they give them a bad name.
shareI invite everyone here to continue the discussion of mainstream Mormonism versus the FLDS and who believes what in my thread entitled “Thoughts on Jeb Pyre?” on the “Under the Banner of Heaven” discussion forum.

I just came to say basically the same thing and now I am also on episode 2. Truly sick! And even marrying his moms? It is sad how people will believe this stuff because it was all they knew.
shareLet me know when you've finished it what your thoughts are. I don't want to say much since you haven't seen the whole thing.
Not everyone was born into it though. Some professionals joined as adults! I just will NEVER understand that!
That is true. The first family introduced and the father/husband was a convert, true! How did I forget that so quickly? Crazy, hard to understand for sure
shareI don’t think I can finish it. Was getting to be too much for me.
shareI totally understand how you feel.
What upsets me more than anything is that even though he's in jail for the rest of his life, he's still running things.
He gets visitors all the time and they bring back his orders, just like he was still there. Talk about a travesty of justice!
The worst thing is that in the end, little has changed. The leader is in jail for life, but the cult remains strong and the pedophilia and abuse is still ongoing.
