The "Final" Message sent from Dave/HAL to Earth (in "2010: Odyssey Two"):

ALL THESE WORLDS
ARE YOURS EXCEPT
EUROPA

ATTEMPT NO
LANDING THERE

Hahaha, Joanfutiere! I was thinking the EXACT same thing throughout the entire movie! LOL And if you've READ "The Space Odyssey" series "2001 - 3001" (and especially if you've read "The Time Odyssey" the "orthoquel" (a word Arthur C. Clarke coined)(aka a "sort-of" orthogonal or "companion" series)), you know that the lifeform (which at least possessed "animal intelligence", but I suspect MUCH more!) they encountered there in "Europa Report" was PRECISELY what happened in those books by Arthur C. Clarke (and Stephen Baxter on T.T.O)!

In T.S.O., "2001" & "2010", Aqueous Life evolved when the gas giant, Jupiter, was ignited by the Monoliths. As it turned out, however, "The Firstborn" (who sent the Monoliths in T.S.O. and the Spheres in T.T.O. AND tried their DAMNEDEST to wipe us out BOTH times!) wound up disappointed with the fact that the new life-forms weren't evolving quickly enough or "correctly" enough on Europa!

I think the fact that Mission Control played a portion of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30" for the astronauts once they had successfully launched and docked AND the specific TYPE of lifeform the astronauts encountered under the ice on Europa made this all a love-letter to Arthur C. Clarke's work!

BTW: If you are a TRUE SciFi fan AND a reader (it makes me feel ill that I have met and known SEVERAL people in my life who essentially brag about the fact that they DO NOT READ! Not to mention that the current generation considers reading passé! ) you DEFINITELY should read both series of books!

Thank you Mr_Frost for your recent reply, Glad someone noticed my comments,,lol
I am an avid fan of Sci-Fi and first saw 2001 in the early 70's, but I have never actually read any sci-fi books, although I read a lot mostly Crime,I have watched 2001 and 2010 many many times and always marvel at the technology of the movie for such an early time.I will endeavor to read the books you suggested.
Thank you

It's full of Stars....lol

Am glad I have inspired at least 1 person to read these 2 series of books! :)

Read "Space Odyssey" first, THEN "Time Odyssey"... They tend to make more sense that way...

One of my next series to read is the "Rendezvous with Rama" series. I remember (vaguely) reading the first book back when I was a teen (over 30 years ago now + or -). But I know there were several sequels written to it as well... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendezvous_with_Rama

I really like Rendezvous with Rama. The sequel not as much, and I didn't finish the one after that.

I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure you're not Hitler.

Better yet, had they READ 2010, they'd have known that the Chinese spacecraft which landed on Europa broke through the ice and was destroyed by a large glowing tentacle monster...

That's the only thing that (sort of) bugged me about "Europa Report": it was basically an extended chapter from the book 2010 which had been cut from the movie version.

Otherwise, I liked it.

Oh wow! I had forgotten about that! lol 

It's been a WHILE since I read the first 2 books! 

Good catch! 
