how did the asian guy die? it seemed like he disappeared half way through the film.

He died during the departure attempt of the landing vehicle in which it crash landed. Remember he got up to release the "water shields" in order to lessen the impact and later his crew members found him croaked.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.

He released from his chair to release the water shields and a subsequent shift in thrust or something threw him down the corridor and caused him to slam into the "floor" down "below" where the crew would have been strapped in. It happened very quickly. His body can be seen in the air lock covered by a sheet.
