The original first draft writer came up with this idea and was fired when the producers noticed there would be no story to tell. LOL.

They answer that in the movie. Something like "you can't replace the presence of a human to face the challenge".

And anyway, why not just send a probe to the top of Everest instead of climbing it? Humans are explorers.

You had to be there.
