In real life, astronauts always cool. You can have something terrible happening in front of them, but they still talk and act cool. That's real astronauts.
I agree. There is no way they would be floundering around, if for no other reason than they are highly trained specialists and much of what they would do would be second nature from years of drills. They would have prepared for many scenarios both before leaving Earth and over the years of ther journey, including meeting more evoloved lifeforms even if such are considered unlkely. Addiionally, space is highly, highly dangerous, with dozens of ways for the whole crew to be killed instantly, and there is simply no room for lone gunmen to play out hunches or decide things on their own.
