Who was in charge

Was this supposed to be some sort of 60s communal living situation where everyone just decides what they will or won't do all the time? And it ended up like those communes too.
Next time put someone in charge, someone who can give orders and make sure they get followed.

And what difference would that have made? Bear in mind that we're talking about a crew of highly qualified civilians (three of them are PhDs), not military personnel.

From what I can tell, Xu was in charge. But this isn't a military operation. They're all astronauts with various skills, on a mission that will span years. In a situatiom like that I assume the crew's relationship would be much more based on cooperation and consulting one another, with the lead only taking charge if necessary.

For some reason many people seem to have missed it, but there was a direct quote from the early parts of the film saying: "Our captain is William Xu."

So the Chinese guy was in charge.
