US release?

I would love for this to be released in the US.Does anyone know if this could happen?

reply

The Series has been sold to 50 different countries, but I don't know if that includes the US.

I read somewhere (just rumors for the moment), though, that US is considering making a remake, as usual :)

I'd rather learn Italian language than watch another mediocre US remake although I liked what they did with the British series Shameles

I'd rather learn Italian language

good luck with this plan ...I saw episode 1 yesterday and it's in Neopolitan, a dialect of Italian which I would say even those who have Italian as their first language would struggle to understand more than 50% of whats said. In Italy, it's broadcast in Neopolitan but non-speakers of Neopolitan can display Italian subtitles if they wish.

Neopolitan is not as extreme a dialect as Sicilian or Sardinian but it's close!!

reply

Neapolitan is actually a language and not a dialect of Italian.

It's a very rare event when the US can do a remake that is equal to the original. That applies even more so when it's a Foreign Language remake.

I think the problem is one of "dumbing down". The writers/directors/producers assume that it is going to be watched by retards and write accordingly.

reply

That's true though in my opinion, Homeland is better than the original :)

reply

love homeland(us) but totally disagree. I live in the US and prefer all the subtitled original series that i have watched over the remakes. I actually have watched mainly non us series in the last year. It was new to me to me and there are so many great well known series that have subtitles. (Engrenages, Braquo, Danish / Swedish thrillers, Borgen, Unit 1, The protectors, Returned, etc etc etc) I just watched The Legacy which is arvingerne (sp) a Danish series that came out this year and it was so great. The Uk airs the original series this year or may have already but the USA bought it and is remaking it. The show will lose its charm completely. The US even remade Broadchurch which is in eng and delivers Gracepoint... what a complete epic fail imo.

reply

I too loved arvingerne and all the danish/swedish stuff. Adult tv for thinking people. Will check out the other suggestions you have made.

ok, im ready now!

reply

Yes that was by far one of the best remakes ever for a tv show.. love them both, but the US version is just gritty awesome.

reply

turns out learning Italian would not help much since the dialect in the series is very different than most Italians use

reply

Shamless US is far superior to the original. I know that's unusual, but the stronger writing, better cast, better direction and higher production values shine through.

reply

Good news. The series was sold to the US and the UK, so you guys have good chances to watch it in English.

Sky Atantic transmitted the first episode on Monday night in the UK - with subtitles.

it's almost September 2015 now. One still cannot even buy a DVD of Gomorra that will play on a US-region DVD player (it is very difficult to find a DVD player that is region-free, and yes I know there are simple hacks to turn cheapo DVD players into region-free players). There is only the UK version which can be ordered on the US Amazon site.

This series is so well-done, especially with respect to production values. Such a shame that nobody in the US knows about it.

Are you religiously opposed to reading English subtitles?

reply

I guarantee this will not be released in the US, at least not for broadcast. And the market for the DVDs is probably too small, it would be more or less the same niche audience that watches foreign films regularly. So they may show up in a US release on DVD someday, but don't hold your breath for it.

Reason #1: subtitles. Americans can't (or, won't) handle them (and forget dubbing in English too).

Reason #2: it's a different kind of mafia genre than what Americans are used to. American mob films glamorize the mob lifestyle; even though these thugs make their living through violence, prostitution, drugs, bribery, and other crimes, they are usually shown living the high life and getting a great deal of respect from women and businesspeople. I am not sure Americans could handle a mob TV series that is not so heavily fictionalized.

Any American reboot of "Gomorra" is going to be so very different from the original that it would not be recognizable. Besides, it would be quite a feat if the reboot could survive the instincts of television execs to interfere and turn it into a Sopranos knockoff.
