Is Ozu really the greatest director ever?

Perhaps for the trendy cultured elite who pretend they've never fallen asleep during any of Ozu's minor films. For other cultural elitists the answer probably would be Renoir, Truffaut or Fellini. But let's be realistic. As far as 99% of the planet is concerned, the greatest director ever has to be Spielberg.

Sorry, mate, can't work out who you're sneering at.
Is it the trendy cultured elite who like Ozu, the cultural elitists who like Renoir, Truffaut or Fellini, or the 99% who prefer Spielberg?

I can't watch an Ozu film without feeling really bored. I think part of the qualifications for 'greatest director ever' means they produce entertaining films -- entertaining films that are also great artistically. I don't believe Ozu is the greatest director ever. I don't think he even belongs in the top 20. He changed cinema, yeah, but that belongs in a different 'greatest' category.

I agree that Spielberg is a special director. He's one of my favorites.
