Would you consider it a musical?

I thiiink I would.

Watching it a third time and most of the tunes in here are also kind of describing the action.

Example: Lewyn singing to the label exec about a woman dying during child birth...while Jean is having an abortion...

I don't know what the qualifications are for a musical anyway. Who cares, great flick.

Thoughts?

No. It's not a musical.

If Inside Llewyn Davis is a musical, then so is Amadeus.

Come to think of it, this would be a fantastic F. Murray Abraham double-feature.

Tomato, tomato.

It's a movie with a lot of great music in it. But it's not a musical with song and dance numbers that stand out from the rest of the story.

As others have said, it's not a musical. People play music but it's not the same as a true musical.

Inside Llewyn Davis is a film about a musician, not a musical. In a musical, he would be singing his songs beyond his musical contexts.
