Usual Coen brilliance?

Can I expect a typical and the usual Coen brothers brilliance ? Magic? Call it what you will. Their movies I've seen I've really loved. Something special about them. Genius is it? I don't know this movie at all. I've only come across it while I was Googling Carrie Mulligan. Talking of magic and brilliance as I was she is...

I think it's one of their best films - but opinions vary widely (as you can probably tell from the IMDB score versus critic score). If you know their films, this is one of the more contemplative ones (some people might think slow or boring) - like Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There, or A Serious Man - as opposed to the more farcical or violent ones.

One thing worth noting: Oscar Isaac is simply amazing - and did all his guitar playing and singing live in complete takes when they filmed (and he has a great singing voice). If you like Isaac (who is likely on his way to becoming the next major American movie star), it's worth seeing for his performance alone (and the soundtrack is worth getting too, IMO).

A melancholic, brilliant film by two great mature filmmakers. 9/10

Amen to that, m-madel.

I concur completely on all the points you mentioned. I'm seriously contemplating if this may be my 2nd favorite effort of theirs. The dialogue. The depth!!!! This movie has so much depth on so many levels, it's crazy! There is nothing simple about Inside Llewyn Davis at all. It's heartbreaking, yet the movie stays true to the characters. So much stuff to mull over long after the movie's over, and the music is definitely one of the "stars" of the show. I wasn't bored at all, but can easily agree it's a slow moving movie and doesn't have the shocking violence that helps keep the pace moving with other Coen classics like Fargo and No Country For Old Men.
