To be fair to everybody, it seems to me that this is a fabulous movie that can be very hard to watch unless you're really in the mood for it. There are a lot of films where you might watch 5 minutes if it pops up on TV thinking that you will just flip the channel at the next commercial only to find yourself still watching 2 hours later. This isn't one of those films.

There is a lot of story, but it is unconnected (as much of real life is, but rarely reel life) It reads a lot like the "character-study" movies of the early seventies (Cassavettes - Five Easy Pieces - etc.)

You are just watching a guy in one week where he is circling the drain. It ends before we know if he sinks or rises. The plot is similar to "A Serious Man" where we are with a protagonist who has bad thing after bad thing happen. A Serious Man for me was filled with details and sub-stories that raised all kinds of questions and opened doors in odd directions that made you think. Llewellyn Davis was filled with great details and interesting sides that just made you say " Oh no - What else could happen to this guy "

It is a quality film, but it is also easy to give up on it.

Not only my favorite Cohen Brother movie, but one of my top 10 favorite films of all time. But I did first watch it when I was homeless and alternating between sleeping in my car and couch surfing, so I do have a strong personal connection with it.

Wow really, I'm really curious to know what the other nine are

In no particular order

Oldboy
The Hunt
LOTR trilogy - yes it's cheating, but I don't care
Into The Wild
Whiplash
2001
12 Angry Men
Paths Of Glory
A Face In The Crowd

Interesting top 10

Do you like the Josh Brolin Oldboy or the 2003 Korean original?

I love this film personally. I think Raising Arizona is their worst. But I understand why a lot of people can't connect to Inside Llewyn Davis.

reply

Seriously? I feel Raising Arizona is a classic Coen Brothers. Love it.

reply

This movie was great.

The Ladykillers was their worst movie. By FAR.

reply

True Grit is their worst. It's soulless.

Even the most primitive society has an innate respect for the insane.

reply

So I guess you hate the book as well?

I never saw the John Wayne version and I never read the book, but I really liked the Coen brothers version.

reply

I don't get all the hate for The Lady Killers. It's hilarious!
