the orange cat

I think the orange cat is rather adorable since it sure had a mind of its own.

It was certainly adorable -- what a pretty kitty!

I heard someone say it was the best performance by a cat they'd ever seen.

That was in this thread, LOLOL:

The best feline performance, in fact the best animal kingdom performance of the year!

the cat feels like a test in a way for Llewyn. And he failed.

Hmm, maybe so. At least the first time, when the cat gets out as he's leaving the Gorfeins' house.

The second time at the end, he succeeds in keeping the cat inside as he leaves.

reply

Given that humans are part of the animal kingdom, that's really saying something.

reply

Sorry -- maybe I should say "best performance by a four-footer" this year!

reply

Given some of the humans I've seen, purrhaps you were right the first time.

reply

purrhaps you were right the first time.

Purrrrrhaps, indeed!

It's one of my favorite feline performances, but Elliott Gould's cat in THE LONG GOODBYE wins for me, it did more.

He keeps that cat inside the 2nd time, but he abandoned the other cat on the highway and then hit it with the car.

"Boy that was really exciting. I bet you're a big Lee Marvin fan aren't ya."

Funny. There were people who thought the cat in Bright Star was the best. I think this one was better and had more of a major 'role' in the film.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014... a tremendously great and talented actor.

Loved the orange tabby. Have one at home. He's so sweet.

I got a really fat one too! He's adorable and cuddly. Moopey is his name.

reply

Moopey? That's a great name! My guy is Mr. Trumbull.

That orange cat was just amazing. So adorable.

I'm sure there were several cats used in the making of the movie, since cats are hard to work with, but they were all cute, especially the one that got the closeup when Mrs. Gorfein held it out shrieking that it had no scrotum. Just freeze it at that point and look at that kitty's expression. Great little face.

There were many orange kitties, even playing the same cat. The Prof's cat had a different face in a few scenes, then it suddenly became a long hair angora cat when it ran down the fire escape.

How they got the cat to stay in Llewyn's arms when he crossed the street - several times - is beyond me. Any of my 3 cats would have freaked out and ran away. And don't get me started on the subway ride!

I liked the part where Johnny Five starts talking (finally) and the cat gives him rapt attention.

Herding cats. an impossibility.

The orange tabby or tabbies in this movie plays a major role. I didn't think it was possible to train a cat, but this movie changed my mind. This cat did some amazing things that a real cat would have done in a given situation if there were no movie camera present. Llewyn had more rapport with the cat than he did with any human in the story.

How the Coens did all that, I have no idea. But, those brothers are capable of putting the most credible images on screen. As someone above mentions, the subway ride would have freaked out most cats, especially the squealing, lurching ride, and frequent complete darkness of a moving 1960s era NYC subway car. But, that cat seemed calm just by Llewyn's presence.

I can't get over the cat's facial expressions. They fit a given situation perfectly. 9/10 for the overall effect.
