Sorry if this is clear one way or the other in the film (and I missed it), but given the way Mike's death seems to affect L, and his penchant for (a) bedding chicks and getting them pregnant, and (b) not caring if these chicks are married/with even friends of his, is there a connection between Mike's suicide and the other girl mentioned who didn't end up having the abortion? Was that Mike's girlfriend/wife?
If that were the case, it would explain more of the sadness and depression that lingers around both the issue of Mike and the girl.
'Then' and 'than' are different words - stop confusing them.
