Its revealed in the first film that 'the last exorcism' refers to the last exorcism that the GROUP WAS PLANNING ON DOING & FILMING!
That's all. It had nothing to do with the main character.

The title itself is "The LAST Exorcism" and there's a 2 tacked on. Last means final or an end. Obviously it is not the LAST as it is a sequel. It's as silly a title as "Final Destination ... 2"
The title worked for the first film, it sounds kind of silly on this film. Perhaps a better title would have been "The New Exorcism" or "The Next Exorcism"

It's the Last Exorcism PART II, though. It could be considered the second half of the last exorcism with that title if it didn't take place a while after it.

Let us not forget "last" also means previous. You could look at the titles as the first one meaning "the previous exorcism" and part 2 meaning "the final exorcism" just as another possibility. I thought the first one was a perfect blend of the the exorcist + rosemary's baby + found footage. The second one is more like Carrie + [REC]2. although i feel it wasted a lot of time until the third act which completely redeemed it for me.
