Do you agree this could have been great if...

Cotton came back? I have no idea why he was bounced. There was no assurance that he died in the original. In fact, it seemed far more likely that he would have survived rather than the father. I kept waiting for him to show up..kind of like I kept waiting on anything remotely entertaining to show up..didn't happen. I see a lot of negativity on the boards regarding the franchise as a whole. Why are you here? I loved the first one and it bums me out that they gave us this pile of garbage as a sequel. As a fan of the first one, I don't see how anyone could deny Cotton absolutely should have been front and center once again. When I think Last Exorcism, I think Cotton. I think Cotton attempting his "last exorcism" on a possessed girl. Centering the movie around Nell was an awful idea. If anyone knows why he wasn't included, please share. I wonder if it was a money dispute or simply an idiotic director.
P.S. The last scene where Nell goes all Grand Theft Auto on us really made me question if the director was just giving us all a middle finger.

There were a lot of ways the sequel could have tied in with the first one in a more cogent way, but for whatever reason(s), they chose a different route. I think critical and fan reaction pretty much affirms it was a poor choice. Hopefully, if they decide to milk the concept for yet another installment, they'll ... well, on second thought, I hope they just let it go.

Cotton couldn't return because they all died in the fire except for Nell. Her father in part 2 is just an illusion, a figment of her imagination created by the demon.

And the first movie was Cotton's "Last Exorcism". If he were to survive and appear in part 2, then logically he wouldn't have performed his last exorcism.

Being that we never actually saw Cotton die, there is no reason he couldn't have come back. The story wasn't called Last Exorcism because it would be the last one Cotton did before he died..it was called Last Exorcism because it was the last one he intended to do. The story revolved around his decision to perform one last exorcism. Things obviously didn't work out the way he anticipated so I think we could forgive him for disregarding the whole last exorcism idea.
Anyway, saw you have Twin Peaks in your sig. For that I salute you haha, best TV show ever. Dexter is the best currently but nothing will ever touch TP.

Dude if Cotton didn't die then the whole purpose of the first movie is for nothing. The story was about him, not her, and without his sacrifice, the story of his redemption lacks any backbone.

He died. Getting engulfed by fire will do that to you. I liked him in the first one, and I enjoyed the first one for what it was, but I'm glad they took this one in a different direction. The results weren't perfect, but they re-centered the story on Nell and chronicled her journey. Nell's journey is portrayed in complimentary fashion to Cotton's. In a way, they both were journey's regarding characters who found their faith.

I liked that this movie was like a fun house mirror to the first, where it almost seems the same, but it's not at all. Both characters find faith and for both it comes at a terrible cost: for Cotton it was his life, for Nell it cost her humanity.

You can't definitively say "Cotton died" because you didn't see it. I always imagined him finding his faith and forcing the demon back into the flames at the end, and nothing in that movie contradicts this theory.
