A pretentious and disgusting mess of a movie.

I was expecting a laid back and simple movie like Keira's previous movie Begin Again with Marc Ruffalo which was surprisingly good and i thought Laggies looked very similar but i was wrong. It only resembles Begin Again on the surface but it's actually hollow. The reason i call this movie disgusting is because it expects us to be okay with Megan casually cheating on her boyfriend when they've been together for 10 years and he's one of the few people in her life who deals with her *beep* and is supporting her jobless ass.

Everyone in Megan's life has moved on and grown up except Megan herself. She's immature and has no passion, drive, goals or ambitions. She has no plans for her future. She finds it weird that her friend is getting married and doesn't laugh at immature jokes anymore because she can't comprehend the fact that they are not 18 anymore. She likes her boyfriend and hanging out with him but when he proposes to her,she freaks out because she never gave a thought about their future and in her own words was just "floating".She doesn't go to career counselling because even though she's aged her mind hasn't and she tries desperately to avoid anything "grown up".The movie makes it sound like Megan's young at heart and everyone around her is boring and serious when that is not true at all.Ellie Kemper's character is obviously weird but she's fun too and loves to talk about their younger days and isn't embarrassed by her past and is very supportive of her.Her boyfriend is a lot like her only not a loser. He immediately picks up that Megan doesn't want a huge wedding with a lot of people so he immediately gives up his dream of having a traditional wedding and suggests they elope.Everyone in her life is sweet and cares for her but none of that matters because she doesn't fit in.So she runs off with a bunch of high schoolers and hangs out with them and meets a quirky Sam Rockwell and within two days of meeting him has sex with him and breaks up with her boyfriend and the movie expects us to believe this is true love.Megan and Annika's relationship has no depth too.Annika just likes her because she's an adult who cats like a child and Megan likes Annika because Annika is a child.

It is just a movie, and the characters are all fictional. Try not to get too emotionally invested. Do you really think there are NOT some people like that in real life?

Make a choice, to take a chance, to make a difference.

You don't like a character who is not necessarily SUPPOSED to be 100 percent likeable. It doesn't make the movie a disgusting mess though. And it certainly doesn't make it pretentious.

This is more in the tradition of screwball comedy than romantic comedy. And it's more indie than typical Hollywood (kind of like the recent "Afternoon Delight"). I actually kinda like that the character isn't entirely sympathetic, her boyfriend isn't made out to be some jerk who deserves to get screwed over, the teenage girls are delinquents who make obscene calls to their math teacher, and the male heart-throb is a cynical lawyer. If you EXPECT a typical romantic comedy though, I guess these things are going to irk you.
