we all agree the opposite would be creepy as hell right?

Some 30 year old man starts to hang out with some woman's 16 year old son and lives with him. Take out the nice indie music in the background......

So you've never seen About a Boy, I'm guessing.

Well it would have more chance of being creepy (because people are quick to jump to assuming the worst possible motives, teens are unbearable why would any adult hang out with them? They must be a creeper!), but depending on the woman this would be creepy as is, no matter which gender it really depends on the person, some people are charming and warm enough to pull most any situation off.

There are some actresses they really couldn't have cast in this role because they'd come off too creepy, Eva Green comes to mind (but that might just be because it recently saw Cracks) both Kira Knightly and Anne Hathaway (who was originally cast) both have the right demeanor to pull off the this is wierd but totally innocent vibe.

Colin Morgan (from Merlin) I feel like totally could have pulled a dude version of this movie without it being too creepy.

Oh and yeah About A Boy, both the movie and the new tv series both pull it off without being creepy.

2 things make it less creepy
1) keira knightly has barely aged physically since the first pirates of the carribean movie, so her and chloe almost look strangely similar in age, she looks maybe 5 year older max rather than the 11-12 year age difference in reality (least in my opinion)i imagine there are some 30 year old men who haven't aged that much physically since highschool also and some highschoolers who could pass for being almost 30, I'm 24 and have had people think I'm 7 years younger

2) Keira knightly is acting like a teenage girl so it's doesn't seem like an adult forming interest in a teenager with ulterior motives other than friendship, if she were acting here age and still into connecting with the teenager it'd make it weirder

about a boy is not similar to this movie, that's a movie about a grown man who looks almost middle age and a pre pubescent kid who likes hanging out with him cause his mom is batsh.t and he has no dad, it's the kid instigating the friendship rather than the grow man who'd rather be left alone, that's why that movie isn't all that creepy

Turn the older man into a stoner and not really.

No I don't think so, 16 is old enough that you could picture a friendship without thinking there was some weird paedophilia going on. It would only be creepy with romantic suggestions.

There are movies like that where you get immature losers hanging out with teens without it being creepy - Drillbit Taylor comes to mind, but I know there are others. It works because there's never any untoward suggestion and the adult character is emotionally younger. There is also About A Boy as mentioned, the boy instigates the friendship in that situation but it is still funny and not creepy.

Picture Michael Cera playing a directionless stoner or something and crashing with a teenage guy played by...I don't know who the popular teenage actors are at the moment, but I could see something like that working.

Overall, a gender reversal would be unusual (simply because Hollywood usually has older men younger women, and single mothers are probably more likely to be threatened by a guy moving in compared to a single father threatened by a woman moving in), but I don't think the plot would be creepy if it had a teenage boy and a 10 year older mid-20s loser friendship.

Maybe, but then as you say, it would be the opposite of what happens here. Boys are not the same as girls. Boys tend not to have slumber parties, for instance.

You mean...

Like the movie "Gremlins" (1984)?

Billy hangs out with a junior high kid.
