Fox Searchlight likes to finance certain themes to win Oscars.

But the film is based on an actual historical event. Yes, it was marketed in a way to win awards, but I doubt the film was made with that sole purpose.

Fox Searchlight likes to finance odd movies in general. Grand Budapest Hotel is an example.
