Am I missing something?

It was about 11:00 PM and dark when their flight began. I believe it was someone on the plane looking at their watch or phone that indicated this. Flash forward to about the time the fighter jets begin flying alongside the plane and there is day light (indicating they have arrived in Iceland, I assume).

Liam Neeson received the first text message shortly after the plane took off, which then started the first 20 minute countdown. There was only one more 20 minute countdown almost immediately after that... and then the countdown of the bomb, which was what, thirty minutes? Then there were the jets and day light.

As the movie made it quite clear there wasn't much extra time between these events, there couldn't have been more than 2 hours that passed from take off to emergency landing.

So they flew out of a NYC airport and emergency landed in Iceland in two hours?

reply

There may be a lapse in time here, but also keep in mind that London is 5 or 6 hours ahead of New York, so 1AM in New York could be 7AM in London.

Therefore the sun could possibly be rising that soon.

reply

They didn't land in London. They landed in Iceland. Yeah, there is still a 4 or so hour time difference, but still.

London and Iceland are in the same time zone.

Hate to nitpick trivia on a movie that's this godawful, but they're flying over the Atlantic and the pilot says he's flying between typhoons. Thete are no TYPHOONS in the Atlantic. They're called hurricanes.

But really, why bother? This whole thing is a train wreck from start to finish.

reply

The Typhoons referred to are the escort fighter aircraft. One to port, one to starboard, therefore two Typhoon aircraft.

reply

haha--that was funny, thought the Typhoons were storms... :) !

You need to see movies without any expectations, preconceived notions, or knowing what the critics say. I even go so far as to not even reading the written preview of any particular movie I see, that way I never make up my mind before seeing the movie and spoiling it for myself and my partner. Bad attitudes about a movie just indicates that you should stay home and do anything else, because your attitude towards this movie doesn't do it justice.the actors work hard to make a movie enjoyable, they work with the script writer, director and many others to provide entertainment for all of those interested in seeing their movie and (hopefully)
enjoying said movie.

I'm pretty sure (although I can't be certain) that the first text message didn't arrive until there was only 2 hours left of the flight. I think one of the flight attendants commented that they were two hours from London.

Not sure what time they took off but the first text message arrived at 10.55pm. There was no indication of which time zone that was though. It could have been US time or London time.

The pilot said "It's 95 minutes to get back to Halifax... 2 hours to Iceland, 3 to London". That was after the first message was received when Marks decided to let the pilot in on it. Earlier the captain had said that it was a 6 hour flight when announcing to the passengers at takeoff, so they were precisely at the midway point. It also means the flight took off at 8PM EST.

It was 10:52PM EST when he received the first message, therefore it was 3:52AM in both London and Reykjavik, Iceland. 2 hours later, when the plane would have made it to Iceland had it gone there directly when Marks asked the Captain, it would have been 6AM. When they did decide to divert a little while later, that means it would have been sometime after 6AM or after the sun was up. Seems like it all adds up to me.

It's not a question of time zone or length of flight: in Iceland, in summer, there is daylight 24h/24 because it's on the arctic circle. I have been there.
Check it if you want.

I'm also wondering how these people, at 20k - 30k feet, are able to text message. How are they getting a cell phone signal?

reply

Using the Wifi on the plane I suppose.

reply

actually, if I remember, after he gets the first text and sets his watch they say they are three hours from London. They're diverted after the third death (or after an hour) so landing in Iceland an hour after that wouldn't be impossible. A flight there would take 5 hours from NYC. It's not stated that it's Winter. If it's summer, the sun rises in iceland at about 2am so it's VERY possible for the sun to be out.

My teenage angst has a body count

I come from Iceland and you should know something, if this happens in summer there is always daylight in Iceland never ends until the summer ends there is always daylight in Iceland in summer.
