why the high reviews

I thought it was fun. Really liking the rise of Glen Powell. There was one scene that was a weird tone shift, but had lots of fun with the rest.

I'm still undecided about him, I guess he's the new romantic male lead for these kinda films.
You're right though the tone shift if its the one im thinking of at the end was a bit ohhh ok you gonna let that happen and go there now!

It was entertaining but insubstantial and I kept expecting more. Linklater went for a light-hearted tone and easygoing pace that didn't quite match the subject matter. It really needed to be a dark comedy, or else a fast-paced screwball comedy that could paper over the cracks in plausibility. The leads were likeable and the dialogue fun if not actually funny. It kept my attention and I don't regret watching it, which is something I suppose.
