Wanted to like this movie, but main problem is Redford

I am a huge film buff and love like all of J.C. Chandor's other films (Margin Call is very good, A Most Violent Year is not as well done, but still captivating, and Triple Frontier was captivating). I wanted to like this, I really did but it has so many problems with it. While the storm is well staged and I understand that it is very difficult to center a movie around a character with no name, no backstory, nearly no dialogue, and the sole person on screen, there is huge mistakes made. The first is that Redford is really bad in this, he did the physical work very well, especially for this age, but he seems to not care at times in the movie. In the beginning when his boat runs into a shipping container and creates huge hole in the ship, he sure takes his time in finding out what the problem is. There is basically no urgency in him and seems mostly annoyed rather than trying to quickly repair the boat. Secondly, he seems like he does not care to be saved. When he is on his inflatable raft he passes by two shipping containers and does not really scream out all that much or make a lot of effort to be seen. I was kind of shocked, I was saying to myself "your life is on the line and you really seem like you are only giving about 70 % of your energy." I know he has flares, but if it was me I would be jumping up and down as well as screaming at the top of my lungs, along with using the flares. Finally, he creates a signal fire to alert another boat that he thinks he sees in the distance and the fire gets out of control and consumes the raft. Really? You were to stupid to create a controlled fire? Maybe the reason you are alone on your boat is because the people in your life saw how stupid and illogical you were and did not want to put their life in your hands.

People make this mistake all the time: "if it was me I would be jumping up and down as well as screaming at the top of my lungs", therefore there is something off about someone who does not behave the way I would behave.

Redford’s character put very little effort into survival. I feel if it was given to a more capable and versatile actor the movie would have been more impactful. Redford has never been a skillful actor and has played the same role in almost every movie of his career.
