really?

How is it possible that big ship doesnt see him?
Cant believe that, its quiet weather, they could see him from far away

reply

I agree. It makes no sense that not one but two shipping vessels would completely miss a flare.

I don't think that those tiny container ship crews spend much time scanning the open ocean. Why would they?

The ships are in the shipping lanes... meaning other ships are also there... meaning there is absolutely a crew on the bridge at all times. You don't just leave the bridge unattended ... especially in the shipping lanes. If a flare is in the sky, ESPECIALLY how close he was to the ships when putting the flares up, the ship should see it... no question.

OMG, you're right! Thanks for pointing that out. What was I thinking?

No question, but it would be a question of who is looking and where. It's a big assed ocean out there and an even bigger assed sky. From the bridge, through those windows you'd have to be lucky to be looking in the right direction at the right time.
On the other hand if those merchant marines tend to do the 'king of the world' sort of thing, they'd probably see it... if they were looking in the right direction... at the right time.

Disagree, the windows on the bridge are huge and typically provide a 360 degree view. On a ship that large, there is also not only 1 person on the bridge.

I can understand the first ship missing him as he didn't get the flare in the sky and was just waving it from his raft. That was below the line of sight for the bridge... easy to believe they missed it.

The next ship, he put up at least 3 flares and was in close proximity to the ship. No way that would have been missed ... no way!
