What was the point of having Emile Hirsch in this?

The guy is fourth billed and shows up over an hour and fifteen minutes in the movie. He has two scenes for a total screen time of maybe five minutes. You could also cut his character out completely and it would not affect the story at all. So was he just cast to get producers to put up more money or to dupe people into believing he had a bigger part?

He may be a friend of the director or of one of the producers.

Seems unlikely it was to "dupe people into believing he had a bigger part." Are there many people out there who are going to give a shit that Emile Hirsch is in a movie?

Thanks for the reply.

I guess many people do not know or really care about Hirsch. I do find it strange that this guy was at one point poised for potential stardom and basically threw it away with alcohol and drug abuse and publicly attacking a female producer at a red carpet event.

I'd say he's a competent performer and that's about it. I'm not going out of my way to watch a movie because he's in it, and in fact when I see him I usually think that there's someone better that could've been chosen.

He does land in some good films though and I enjoyed the Bonnie and Clyde mini-series he did a handful of years ago. In fact, I bought that one on Blu-Ray.
