Let's rank the characters from least to most horrible/evil/culpable
Most of the people in this movie were horrible to some extent, which was actually an interesting change. I'm pondering their rankings, from least horrible to most horrible, or least innocent to most.
1. The baby: didn't do nothin'
2. Helga (the old woman, Heather's mother): had dementia, couldn't be blamed for anything, had no agency and was a victim of circumstance
3. Frank (the exterminator): some minor character weaknesses, like he attacked Ethan in the heat of the moment, but ultimately was just a guy doing his job and can't be blamed too much for freaking out. Also fought back against the spider and seemed ready to team up to hunt it.
4. Maria (the childless neighbor): just a normal tenant, though had an annoying dog. Also quite blameless.
5. Charlotte (the daughter): adopted the spider, didn't tell her family even when it became obvious it was venomous, didn't consider how it was a terrible idea with her baby brother in the house. Had a habit of sneaking around in the vents, spying on people, and lying about it. But is also just a kid and played a major role in saving her family. Was fully willing to kill her pet once it became clear it was indeed willing to attack them.
6. Ethan (the father): Selfless, did everything for everyone and got shit on constantly, but also lost his temper and hurt his step-daughter's feelings quite badly because he was (rightfully) angry. Ultimately played a major role in saving his family.
7. Gunter (Helga's sister): Total cunt, enjoys being cruel and sadistic to Ethan and others, reneged on her agreement with Frank. But her terror is mostly limited by her lack of involvement in the other characters' lives.
8. Erik (the homebrew scientist neighbor): Just some autistic guy, but when he recognizes the immediate danger that everyone is in he lies to Charlotte and begins experimenting with the spider rather than calling the authorities as he promised. His desire to experiment with the spider accelerates the timeline of the next attacks, and not doing what he knew was right (turning in the spider) dooms them.
9. Heather (the mother): mostly cold and cruel like her aunt, constantly shits on Ethan and doesn't recognize how he's greatly improving their lives, doesn't seem to appreciate how lucky she is he's not a deadbeat loser like her ex and who is actually there for Charlotte. At Ethan's darkest moments she isn't empathetic and threatens him with losing access to their family, as if it's her right to take that away. Lied to her daughter for six months as to the location of her father, against Ethan's wishes. She's also cold to her daughter and doesn't seem to make an effort to engage with her interests, and is primarily just annoyed she's not obedient and subservient. Her positive qualities seem limited to meeting the basic standards of motherhood, though expects her struggling daughter to be a babysitter without making sure to make it up for her.
10. Sting: has the intelligence to observe it's interacting with other intelligence, but chooses to murder them all anyway.
