Netflix has the rights to the remaining episodes, just won't put it up

I had contacted Netflix on several occasions to get the rest of season 3 posted (several episodes of season 3 are posted but under season 2 for some absurd notion.) Since I didn't get anywhere with Netflix I contacted Betafilm directly about working out something with Netflix. Here is their response

"BetaFilm is an international distributor of TV licences. As such, we licence TV programmes to broadcasters throughout the world, but we have no influence whatsoever if or when broadcasters actually make these programmes available to their audiences. Season 3 is supposed to be available on Netflix later this year, so we have to ask you for your patience."

So obviously Netflix already has the license and apparently just doesn't find it important enough. I'm not very happy with them about this

reply

Unfortunate to hear but at the same time it is probably better than if they didn't yet acquire the rights.

I thought about many possible reasons as to why Netflix wouldn't yet post the remaining episodes from a business POV. All were easily negated somehow and I am down to three reasons: 1) they simply don't find it important enough like you suggested. 2) they waited for SkyTV to air the final season for whatever reason (and it's over now) and 3) Netflix maybe does it's own subtitling? That can take quite a long time. Perhaps 5 hours of work for every hour of video or even more depending on pickiness of their translation. It is not only time consuming but a costly process to hire translators for that many hours which would also lend into the "not important enough".

reply

Sky Arts showed Season 3 with English subtitles, so I should think they'd be available to Netflix without their having to do their own. They did a great job with them on the first 42 episodes, whoever did that. I know it had run in the UK before, so perhaps they did those, too.

I'm not so sure it's finished on Sky Arts. It only started at the beginning of January. Unless they're running them several times a week, and there are 22 more episodes, it doesn't seem like they would have finished yet, but I'll get in touch with my friends in the UK and ask. I'm hoping that as soon as it is done there, we can get it on Netflix. I guess it's time for us to start contacting them—again. Sheesh.

reply

All good points. I'm wondering if it could also be taking long because Netflix decided to cut each episode to 44 mins from it's original 1 hour+ episodes. So maybe they're doing that for the new season.

I had a pretty great and enthusiastic conversation with a Netflix rep. It gave me much hope that we'll see it soon. *Hopefully!*

Lizzing is a combination of laughing and whizzing...

reply

I've contacted them a bunch of times, too. I think the key to all this is,

"Season 3 is supposed to be available on Netflix later this year, so we have to ask you for your patience."
So, whatever "later this year" means, it doesn't appear that Netflix has the rights to show it yet or they would.

I know I'm not the only one watching this. I've even run into a friend who had watched it without telling me and we were both thrilled to know we had both found it and enjoyed it so much. We had some great conversations about the characters, too, and she came over to watch the first episode with me and helped me figure out some of the Spanish expressions I was interested in. The waitresses at the Mexican restaurant we go to have watched it and then went on to watch season 3 on YouTube though my friend said the last three episodes aren't available. It's nuts. I've never been so obsessed over a show I couldn't get my hands on. Very frustrating.

I have no idea why this isn't available in this country as a DVD set. I know it would sell. We have a huge Spanish-speaking population where I live, and this is ten times as good as any of the novelas on TV.

My edit: I've now watched all the episodes so far broadcast on Sky Arts on other websites online. With my Apple TV and iPad, I was able to watch them on my TV, which made it much better though the picture isn't quite as good as it is on Netflix. Here's a link to the first one. It takes some doing to get it to play, but I think the formula is to click towards the bottom of the black window, not on any of the arrows, and it will play after it buffers. http://www.alluc.com/l/Gran-Hotel-S03E01-Hardcoded-Eng-Subs-Sno-watchs eries-online-ch-mp4-mp4/xdyi6fck. I have links to sites that show all the others (VidLocker seems to be the best site with the fewest hassles). Tomorrow is the tenth show on Sky Arts, so it should come up on video online soon after.

The third season is great! I can't believe after all these months I'm finally able to watch it. From what I can tell there are only three more episodes left. All of these episodes are long, about an hour and a quarter. If Netflix ever gets it, they may change them to shorter episodes as they apparently did with the first two seasons. We'll see.

reply

For me the worst part is that Netflix hasn't replied to me or anyone I know who's contacted them by email, facebook, etc. Even if they were to say that they don't have the rights yet, would be better than the silence treatment. Especially since they left off half a season. I'd rather have had them wait until Netflix secured all the rights. You'd think that the company would want to be more customer friendly so we watch all their new series.

I've tried to watch without English subtitles and though I get the gist, I learned Spanish a long time ago and I learnt the Latin American type-so the vosotros form and the lisp "th" instead of "s" always throw me. But GH is better than most Spanish TV since there is very little slang. Especially compared to Velvet which I can't understand nearly as well. Plus the lead actors really annoy me. Lead actor has one facial expression as does the lead actress. I only watch that show for the other cast members-and the clothes. But Gran Hotel is much crazier and fun-what with the police detectives and the bromance between Julio and Andres. It just seems like a show that doesn't take itself too seriously.

reply

Interesting post! 😊 I kinda know what you mean about Velvet. And sometimes they get talking so fast, it's just impossible to even keep up with the English subtitles, especially when they get excited. I think the most fun thing about it is recognizing so many of the actors, which would not have been the case before I'd seen Gran Hotel. And I've now watched Netflix's 42 episodes eight times through almost (I have two episodes to go) whereas I've only watched Velvet once (of course, it's only recently been available). Still, I think I will go back over that for the Spanish before going back to Gran Hotel, for a break if nothing else. I do what I can to keep it in my head all the time while I'm also studying it using Fluencia. It should be noted that the 39 episodes IMDb speaks of are all an hour and 15 minutes, as shown on TV originally in Spain.

The rest of this has some edits I added: The seasons are confusing for this show. I believe they combined the second and third seasons when it was run on TV in Spain, making it all a long second season. We're waiting for the third season on Netflix, which may have 22 episodes if they continue showing them 45 minutes long. The original shows were an hour and 15 minutes, and there were 14 episodes in the third season as shown in Spain. Most of the third season is available on YouTube, but I couldn't get much out of watching it there without decent subtitles. I did, however, find the rest of it online at clicknwatchonline.com/grand-hotel-s03e1 for the first episode. You have to put in the URL for each episode separately, i.e. clicknwatchonline.com/grand-hotel-s03e2, etc. And yes, they have English subtitles! I really loved the ending, btw. It was incredibly satisfying!

You might try live-chatting with someone from Netflix. If you click on Contact Us, I think it will become obvious what to do to start a chat with someone there. I've done that several times and stressed how important it was that we get the rest of Gran Hotel. If all the GH fans start doing that, it's going to make an impression. At least it should, seems to me. Even having seen the rest of the series, I'd still like to see it again on Netflix since the picture is better, and we all know how gorgeous everything is to look at, so we want to see it clearly.

¡Buena suerte!

reply

it doesn't appear that Netflix has the rights to show it yet or they would.

You have a lot more faith in Netflix then I do. I do think they have the rights, after all, part of season 3 is already on there only added to season 2. One might argue that happened with Breaking Bad, but that show was still airing so that's probably why that season was broken up. I think the fact that the licensing agency said they have no control over when Netflix puts up the show is directly implying that Netflix could any time.

My gut feeling is that they have it has a very low priority for this show. It is a fast moving show and packed with dialogue that needs translation. Netflix is very busy right now with their original productions as that will make them more money and that has always been what Netflix is really about. They would never admit this though, so they blame it on not having the rights because it doesn't appear to be their fault then.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer about Netflix but I've had the service since almost the very first day it was offered and have learned a thing or two about them. What people want is almost never a reason for them to do something. How much they will make always is.

reply

Actually, the original season 3 was added to season 2 when it was being broadcast in Spain, making season 2 one long season. The season 3 we're waiting to see would originally have been season 4. It either is being or has been shown in the UK with English subtitles beginning last month. And now it is available on some obscure website although I didn't find it very satisfactory and gave up because of buffering issues. But the point is, it is ready to go. Perhaps I am having more faith in Netflix than is warranted, but I still hope pressure from their viewers will get us the remaining 22 episodes. Did you ever contact them about that? It couldn't hurt.

reply

Yes, I have contacted them on several occasions to request the remaining episodes and several family members who also watched the show did as well. Unfortunately, I have significant skepticism that will do any good. The most frustrating part of the Gran Hotel availability is that we are slaves to Netflix for it. Amazon has DVD's but they won't work on US players. Otherwise I would have bought the DVD's instead of waiting on Netflix.

reply

If anyone is still dying to watch season 3, the first few episodes are around with english subtitles. I've seen the first 5 now.

reply

Where did you see them? Don't leave us with another cliffhanger, please!

reply

Lol! Go to Google and search Gran Hotel Season 3 Episode 1. Then click the videos tab. One of the videos should be it (not YouTube) and from there you should be able to find the rest with a little searching. If you run into any trouble let me know I just don't know how much I can say on here.

reply

An exactly link would be nice. All I can find so far are episodes that say they're Season 3, but they're really Season 2 since the two seasons were combined, and I've seen them already. You can put up links as long as you highlight it and click the Link button. Thanks!

Well, I tried this, but it refuses to buffer fast enough so I can watch the show in less than several hours, and ads in English keep interfering with the sound. Plus it kept putting up strange windows on Google about how I could watch 600 shows. I dunno. I'm not sure what to do. I was getting warnings about malware, too. Well, at least I found out Julio survived, is injured, but nothing more. Of course, that was obviously going to be the case. Are you familiar with this website? Is it safe to download the video? Maybe that would work better. It seems to give me that option though I didn't try it. Did you? Thanks.

reply

First off I apologize about any mass amount of ads you may have encountered. I have something called "adblock" (I suggest you download it, it's a godsend) so I haven't had to deal with any ads in years.

I am familiar with this site however I would suggest you don't download the video. I do not know if it is safe or now but I wouldn't want you to take the risk. I have noticed certain episodes stream slowly and others are fine. I only had this problem with episode 3.

If you are familiar with torrents you may want to give those a shot instead. Of course with that as well you have to be cautious of who you download from. On ThePirateBay they usually have "trusted" or "VIP" skulls which are typically safe.

OMG, bbq, I finally got to see the first episode of Season 3. It's about freaking time! Thank you so much. It was kind of jerky at times, but watching it in the middle of the night probably helped. Now, if you could please put up links to each of the other episodes you've seen, I'd really appreciate it. I can't seem to figure out how to get to the next capítulo on that site, and doing google searches didn't help. There's nothing on that website that indicates you can "click here" for the next one. If you found out how, you're much better at all this than I am. 😉 I'm so happy I found out what happened after the explosion and what happened to Javier, which was kind of what I was expecting, but you never know. And then there was a new character played by one of the main actresses from Velvet, so that was fun! Amazing how I'm getting to know all these Spanish actors. Thanks again!

I figured it out for the second episode! Thank you so much. I had to download a video player, but this time it worked great. I just hope it didn't put something weird into my computer. I ended up watching it on something called VidBull. But seriously, I can't figure out how to get to the next episode on that website, and I tried googling it and nothing came up that looked like it would work. Again, if you have a link, that would be terrific.

I must say, the plot thickens on Grand Hotel, doesn't it? I thought it was complicated before! LOL I can hardly believe I'm finally able to watch new episodes. I just hope it doesn't stop with this one.

You could have streamed it, no need to download anything!(except adobe flash, required to stream anything) Just click on "Close ad and continue as a free user" and then play. You might have clicked on the ad!

That's all there is now!

This season is much more evil I feel, more physical violence! Diego also has no redeeming qualities at all left.

reply

OMG, thank you so much. I did stream what I've seen so far, but you know these websites are confusing, I suppose designedly so. There are other boards where people are whining about not seeing season 3, so I'll send them here and make a lot of people happy. 😃

I agree with you about Diego. He's just gotten more and more awful, and I thought he was terrible in the first two seasons. I keep wondering (I know this is fiction, but I still wonder) how he could possibly think Alicia is going to either love him or be faithful to him when he's so, as she said, despicable. ¡Caramba! Otra vez, muchas gracias por las conexiones.

reply

But he's just so evil...even Thomas wouldn't last long at that hotel. Have to admit, he has the juiciest role along with the mother.

There are two more shows that I'm enjoying or waiting for. One is on DreamFever app and is called Isabel and it's of course about Queen Isabella. It's soapy as heck and the history would make my old teacher tear out his hair but the acting is great. I always thought that the actress who played Isabel and the one playing Alicia could be sisters.

Then there is a new sci-fi/time travel series coming out this week called El Ministerio del Tiempo(The ministry of time). About a secret organization started by the catholic monarchs to guard portals from those who may come from other times. Spanish press is calling it a Spanish Doctor Who but it seems more like an old show called Voyagers. It stars the actor who played Ferdinand on Isabel and Isabel herself has a cameo. It sounds muy interesante and I hope that either Hulu or Netflix(cough*cough) will buy it. Certainly a nice change from the endless telenovelas.

reply

Well, since Somewhere in Time and Quantum Leap were two of my favorite filmed productions, I would love to watch El Ministerio del Tiempo, but my Spanish is just not there yet if they don't have English subtitles, and at my age it may never be. Isabel sounds interesting, too. I hope you're right about Netflix getting these shows, but I'm not holding my breath. Still, who knew the Spanish were putting out such quality stuff? I had no idea before last July. Gracias que usted por la información. Espero esto es correcto.

reply

I looked up the two shows you mentioned. I could only find a trailer for Isabella, but I actually was able to run at least the first episode of El Ministerio del Tiempo http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/el-ministerio-del-tiempo but it didn't have subtitles, unfortunately. The star looked kind of like Alfonso Bassave who played Gonzalo Alarcón, el primo. It looked pretty violent from the little I saw. I didn't recognize any of the actors I saw in either of these from anything I've been watching.

Well, I've watched all I can of Gran Hotel, six long episodes into the third season. Until I can find the rest of the episodes somewhere, I'll just have to be patient. Poor Andrés! I can't help thinking Belén is going to show up again, however. She always does...😣 I just hope Netflix gets these episodes. It's kind of a pain and quite a project trying to figure out how to get them on other websites.

reply

Isabella is on Hulu for free!
Netflix probably won't get them for a while or release them for a while I feel. I'll definitely rewatch it then, because streaming never has the best quality.

reply

Be advised that Hulu has only the first 2 seasons available. If you get hooked, you might have to wait a while before Hulu makes Season 3 available. If you're Spanish is fluent, you can watch all of "Isabel" for free on the rtve site: http://www.rtve.es/television/isabel-la-catolica/

Beware, however, that your Spanish has to be pretty much native to make out what they're saying in "Isabel." My Spanish is very good, but not native. I watch all my Spanish TV shows without subtitles (Velvet, Gran Hotel, Bajo Sospecha, Doctor Mateo, Victor Ros, etc.) and understand everything. But wow, figuring out what they were saying in "Isabel" was a real chore because they try to re-create 15th Century Spanish. It isn't 15th Century, but it sure doesn't sound like the Spanish spoken today.

reply

I found Season 3 on YouTube.com. It's not full screen but it will do. Season 3, Episode 1 starts with the explosion aftermath.

reply

You'll have an easier time with it by going to http://www.clicknwatchonline.com/grand-hotel-s03e01/. Then you can watch all of the episodes with English subtitles though you have to use the same URL each time with s03e02, e03, e04, etc. to get to the subsequent episodes. There are 14 in all. Enjoy!

reply

Thanks so much!!

reply

Of course, now you can watch the third season on Netflix, and it looks so much better than Clicknwatch. :) Yay! However, Netflix did have a few scenes deleted for some reason, so if you want to see everything, you might have to go with Clicknwatchonline.com.
