Gran Hotel fans - Velvet?

Loved Gran Hotel and just watched episode 1 of Velvet. I see some similarities to Gran Hotel in reverse (rich boy, poor girl) and Ana's story as a child grabbed me but for some reason I am not excited to watch the next episode as I was with GH. I am anxious to see Llorenc Gonzalez as I loved him as Andres in GH and may keep going for him, but the music and store setting doesn't grab me. Will it take more than one episode to click? I guess I am spoiled after watching GH.

I loved Gran Hotel and hesitated for a while to get started on Velvet, but I think I love Velvet even more. It did take several episodes though, before I was completely hooked. The lead male actor is Miguel Ángel Silvestre who also stars in the new Netflix hit, Sense8. He's a great actor and incredibly charismatic, in my opinion. The love story between Alberto & Ana is really sweet. I admit the sets are not as spectacular as Gran Hotel (or other period dramas like Downton Abbey.) I think that's mainly due to the time period, the 1950's. Alberto's family home, for example is a mix of traditional reproductions & Mid-Century Modern, which really can't compare to the grand elegance of Downton or Gran Hotel. But the fashions are to die for and I love the couture story line. The music is great and really well suited to each scene. I highly recommend it! As you probably know, the first 2 seasons of Velvet are on Netflix with English subtitles. The third season started running on TV in Spain several weeks ago. I paid to be a premium subscriber, for Antena 3, the network that broadcasts Velvet, so I can watch the new season online. There are no English subtitles and my Spanish is not good at all, but I just had to see what happens next!

Thank you so much. I will keep going (as I love Andres from GH and he is in Velvet).

I can't say I liked Velvet as much as Gran Hotel (the only thing lately I like better than that is Poldark), but Velvet was still a lot of fun, and I got interested in the characters. It was also fascinating to see this combination of the series taking place in Madrid all in Spanish while the music was all specially written by the same composer who wrote the music for Gran Hotel, Lucio Godoy, all in various 50s styles and sung in English! There are actually quite a few actors who were in Gran Hotel that also appear in Velvet, and it's great how they play completely different characters! I'll let you find out who they are for yourself, because that's half the fun. They sometimes look so different, it takes a while to figure out who they are. I didn't keep track of how many but it seems like there were at least 6 or 7. Since you know that Llorenç González is in it, I can tell you his character is quite different from Andres. All this just makes it quite evident that these people are talented actors!

I'm trying to learn Spanish, so I've been watching these kinds of shows to help keep it in my brain. This was definitely worth it for that although they speak really, really fast sometimes though not as much of that demasiado rapido stuff as Gran Hotel had. But sometimes people even speak English, which is a lovely break. I recommend you keep going, and you'll probably start caring about the characters. Ramón Campos is a fantastic storyteller, and I think he improves as he goes. I'm watching El internado, which was one of his first projects from what I can tell, and I think he's gotten better at it as he has more experience. El internado is so far-fetched, it's hard to believe, but it has its points, too, especially for learning Spanish (I finally know most of the swear words now LOL), and it also has some of the actors who were in Gran Hotel and Velvet though they are younger, so that makes it interesting. Yon González has a lead role but plays someone much different and younger, and I don't get his Ivan character confused with Julio ever. I still watch Gran Hotel for the Spanish because it seems to be about the best of all those shows, and now Netflix has both English and Spanish subtitles, which really helps.

BTW, you also might like a show called El tiempo entre costuras (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1864750/), which is on Hulu. One of the actors in that is also in Velvet. Someone recommended Isabel, also on Hulu, but I'm having a hard time getting interested in that because so many of the characters and situations are so unpleasant. So far, I haven't recognized anyone I've seen before. ¡Disfrute!

I am now hooked on Velvet - starting episode 6. I love Marta Haras who is also in Gran Hotel and El Internado; what a beautiful talented actress. She must be very famous in Spain.

And I also noticed that Christina's cousin played Eugenia in Gran Hotel who was going to marry Javier to his dismay.

Looking forward to seeing other stars from El and Gran.

Yes, Marta Hazas must be a busy lady. 🙋 Now, if we could only get the next season of Velvet...

Tried Velvet but couldn't watch past a few episodes. Not interesting as Grand Hotel.
