[Game] Things I learned from Grand Hotel... (possible spoilers)

Some things we learned from the Alarcons, et al...this is always fun to play!
Come on, we all love this game...sarcasm is ENCOURAGED.

1. If there is something written, it WILL be burned.
2. When you want to knock someone out, use a water pitcher.
3. Ayala and Hernando are the Spanish Laurel & Hardy, frealz.
4. Even if you've been in prison for murder, your life can change for the better.

NEXT!

LOL! I just saw this and it's hilarious. It's also hilarious that almost everyone on the show ended up in jail except the actual murderers. At least I thought it was getting pretty funny as each actor took their turn behind bars before it was finally discovered they were innocent, or at least not guilty as charged. ::snicker::

reply

Was there even one character who was never jailed? I feel like every character was arrested and taken to jail at least once.

I don't recall Ayala or his hapless assistant Hernando ever being jailed, but that's about it. ::snicker:: It's been a while since I saw the whole thing, but I'm thinking of running through it again. It's great for hearing Spanish when you're trying to learn it. Maybe I'll make a list of everyone who goes to jail. It ought to be quite extensive by the time I'm done. Hmm, I don't think Maite went to jail, did she?

Amor Real was even funnier as someone faced the firing squad in what seemed like every other episode.

In the early 1900s hotel guests dressed only in white, and marriage and family therapists were clearly nonexistent.

You are a funny man, Mr. Bond. 

Diego can shoot multiple people and never get in trouble

reply

There's that, too. He doesn't even get taken in for questioning. It's quite remarkable. LOL

5. Prison tattoos will always come back to haunt you.
6. Everyone has a secret.
7. There is nothing suspicious about the hotel owner's daughter hanging out in the male servants' quarters (particularly one containing two dashing young men), but it's a scandal if female servants are caught in male servants' quarters.
8. Don't try to frame a serial killer for your murders.

reply

9. Always remove a ring if you plan on smacking someone.

reply

LOL! Good idea, but the only time I ever saw anyone do that was when Doña Teresa slapped Javier in the first episode. Did I miss another example of it?

I'm only just finishing the first season, but I do see the enormous silliness potential of this game.

--No matter how many times your secret letter hidey place is broken into, always put the recovered swag back into the same place. And always let snoopy maids dust in your private office on a regular basis.

--In hotels this big, no one keeps track of which of your waiters is working or not...even when he's supposedly run off, no one blinks an eye when he turns up the next day waiting tables as usual.

--The threat of a bastard son being able to take the legitimate sons and daughters out of the will, even when it's in an informal letter, is much more likely in turn of the century Spain than anywhere else.

I know I'll come up with more after Season Two.

And why does IMDb only list nine episodes for each season? I'm on episode 14 now.

reply

::snicker:: Oh well, it's still worth watching. There is some confusion as to how many episodes there are because Netflix made them into 45 minutes each while the originals were an hour and 15 minutes, approximately. They also cut a few scenes along the way, but mainly they just made each episode shorter, so sometimes you'll see it end seemingly in the middle of things although they do their best to make it end in a logical place. There were originally 39 episodes in three seasons, with the middle season long because they combined season two and three to make it just season two, then added a third season. Netflix turned it into about 66 for some reason. I have no idea why they cut some scenes, as it seemed quite random. I actually have the DVDs of this show, but it's region two, my machine broke, and without inserting the disks, I'm not sure how many episodes are in each season. Needless to say, it depends on where you watch it how many episodes there are. It does have an ending, which I thought was just great and quite original.

Hubby and I both discovered this juicy period piece just a month ago - we are totally LOVING IT!! Just started season 3. Some things we learned from those at the Gran Hotel and elsewhere.

1. "Family is the MOST IMPORTANT, no matter what!" = translated, if it makes Doña Teresa look good or benefit her in any way, spew this comment every chance you can!

2. Anytime you want to 'share a secret', you can be sure you are being overheard by some undesirable.

3. So far we've learned to NEVER EVER trust Teresa, Diego, Sofía or Belén

4. Javier was a cat in a before life, he has used most of his 9 already!

5. That there are both good people upstairs as well as downstairs and in Cantaloa

6. Hubby caught this one - when the Hotel is a disaster, and the phone rings, you see a lamp on it's side, don't pick it upright, just turn it on as it lies on the counter - lol

It's all good, yet no one in this gets away as a perfect person. I know how you feel and consider yourself lucky. When I started watching it over two years ago, Netflix didn't have the third season for months, which you can imagine caused all kinds of consternation with how the second season ended. Sheesh! At least you get to see it all at once. The third season is a bit darker than the first two, but it's still just as good. And now if I watch something else done in Spain, I am always familiar with at least some of the actors. Who knew that would ever happen? 😊

That's one thing we love about watching British shows, we see A LOT of the same actors in other things and we're like, "oh he/she used to be in_____ that one show!!" Just love seeing good acting and writing compared to the crap our US tv has to offer 😀

I watched the first season of Longmire and a little of the second, and then I just stopped watching for some reason. I'll have to give it a try again. I loved how it included storylines about the Cheyenne.
