5 out of 13 people left the showing

I went to see the film at 16:05 on Friday night of the opening weekend. During the film 5 people got up and walked out (or it may have been 6, I'm unsure if the 6th person was 1 of the 5 returning and leaving again).

The showing was pretty much free from audience laughter and when it finished there were 8 people left including me.

I gave it a generous 4/10.

Same experience. Loads of people walked out of the screening. It's a tedious, bad film. People were angry at how bad it was and how Simon Pegg had been used to sucker them in.

I wouldn't call it a bad film, person from two years ago.

I went into it not really expecting a lot, and it ended up being a pretty decent comedy film, with some really trippy visuals and creative psychological undercurrents.

It was a comedy first, but also a kind of compelling character study film. Never really sure about what's real and what's in his head, even down to the setting and period-style clothing. It managed to be funny and clever with its reveals, and you never really know exactly where it's going. But it's about this man's personal journey. I like that.

It drags in the middle, definitely. But that's no reason to disregard everything good about it.

EDIT: Aaaand, after reviewing the film based on another poster's observation, this movie was amazing. Changes the entire experience.

What observation was that that changes the entire experience? I saw this film today and enjoyed it, and will probably watch it again with my wife at a later point.

Remember that last shot, once they get in the cab and drive away, and it lingers on the "serial killer officer"?

Read the white sign to his left. There's a reason that shot lingers like that.

Simon Pegg (whatever his name) was the serial killer, driven mad (presumably) by his research.

reply

it says waiter, not writer. as in reference to the waiter in the restaurant scene

reply

i honestly looked at it for a good 5 minutes trying to read it, but thanks to the blurriness of netflix, could not tell whether it said WAITER OR WRITER. Being that it is only one letter off, it was not decipherable to me, sadly. before reading forums i decided it could be either one, though waiter seemed the more likely.

reply

It says WAITER, sir. I had to look at it too. It says "bodies discovered in the basement of the Soho Restaurant, WAITER suspected".

What does the sign say? It is cut off the edge of the screen on my TV, argh.

Thanks.

reply

is it jumpy? I know that Mr Pegg is supposed to be afraid of everything, do they use jump scares to convey this?

Last films seen:
Moonrise Kingdom 9/10
Men in Black 3 4/10

reply

yeah there is that element to the film. it's not really a "scary" film though.

reply

awww damn i thought this would be good, i wont rush out to see it.

It wasn't very funny. I even thought 'The Watch' was better (and that film sucked pretty badly too), although this was a low budget effort and The Watch certainly wasn't.

Reviews are for those who can't think for themselves. I loved this film and went back to see it several times while it was in the cinema. Can't remember the last time I went back to see a film a second time, much less for a fifth time. That's just how much I liked it.

No one ever walked out of the film any of the times I went to see it. But make your own mind up. 8o)

reply

Hmmm ,Any relation ? by any chance

reply

Your Son, Congratulations, Well I am planning on seeing this either tonight or tomorrow night. So I shall give my opinion then.

reply

To be fair, and maybe it's just the cost of going to the movies here in the states, but I don't think i've ever seen anyone clearly leave during the middle of a movie at the theatres. Well, except for maybe due to an emergency. But I suppose investing $25 to $50 for an experience will cause one to consider what would be the greater waste. Also i've never personally, nor have I been with anyone, or witnessed anyone count the number of people before, during or after a movie other than the attendants that work for the theatre.

My point being- the OP's experience and anecdote is highly suspect.

reply

Well 13 is a pretty high number so you might really have to look over the crowd for a good two seconds to get that count...

How would you even witness someone counting the number of people in a movie theater, or does everyone count with hand gestures and the like to make sure you are always able to witness it?

I am pretty sure I could count any room and you would never notice even if you were trying to. Also if you are really noticing everyone coming, going, and potentially counting people in a movie theater then you are not paying much attention to the movie.

Sorry but the statements you made were all just odd to me and don't make your point very well, unless your point was that your statements and anecdote are highly suspect.

reply

In Australia if you leave within 30 mins you get a refund.

If only a dozen where there and half left I think anybody would probably think of, and be able to, keep count.

reply

what cinema are you going too?! i saw the latest studio ghibli film the day it came out in america and it was $8 a ticket - much cheaper than english cinemas i've been to.

these reviews are pretty damning. also learning that they use 'jump scares' is an instant put off to me, so i'll skip this.

reply

I could see a movie at the matinee for 10 bucks in Boston but at night, in 3d, with a drink, it's about 30 total.

reply

Watched it with my wife recently and we both really enjoyed the film. It felt like a nod back to ealing studio films and there were a few laugh moments. The story started to slow towards that latter quarter but overall we found it enjoyable. Enjoying a film is very much down to personal opinion so try not to let others put you off watching what is a fairly decent film.

reply

Especially since the movie is quite good.

I went to see Spike Jonze's Her a couple days ago, and two people walked out. One walked out after the phone sex scene with SexyKitten and then another group left a good way into the movie when stuff was just getting good, they consistently giggled throughout the whole film so im glad they left.

I don't know if i would call it disrespect necessarily but I can't understand walking out of any movie. Unless there's graphic content you just can't handle, but thats a special case.

reply

i've walked out on movies, specifically quantum of solace which was soooo boring and one of the bad shamalamadindong films, the one with the mermaid maybe. i just bitched until i got my money back and went to do something fun, probably drinking in those days.

reply

A Walter Mitty british version.

reply

What I don't understand is reaching a certain age--29 or 30--and never having had walked out. There is just so much crap these days and gotcha marketing.

reply

What I don't understand is that you value one hour of your life so deeply yet you probably indulge yourself in other meaningless matters for a much longer time. If I pay for a movie, I watch the whole movie. Maybe it's because we were raised on different values... maybe it's because nowadays, with Internet, I can watch it all for free, and when I pay I want the whole experience.

I find it ridiculous to pay for something and let half of it go to waste. It's like buying ice cream and throwing it away.

Maybe it's because I'm a bit antisocial and can't stand going with a big group of people due to previous experiences. I can't stand people giggling, laughing, mumbling, looking at their phones during a movie. You go see a movie you don't like, shut up and be quiet for 2 hours, as simple as that. Louis C.K. couldn't explain it any better, about people's obsession with cell phones nowadays. You don't like a movie, and you're there in a place where you don't want to be... and suddenly you start feeling that huge void inside of you, that black hole that wants to swallow your soul, that thing that makes you see you're alone in this world and that you'll probably die alone. And you don't want that, so you get out, or you get your phone out and start texting, or start talking to your companion regardless of the people around you. Some of you don't know how to be alone.

I've seen some people leave the cinema - I think I already told about that one time I went to see a Chinese film about the new millennium- whose title I can't remember and everybody except for me, a lady with a weird hat and a man had already left from a theatre which FULL of viewers and people who had to wait outside for the next showing. But I must admit that this happened only once, quite a few years ago. I haven't really noticed many people leave the cinema apart from that occasion. I've seen (a couple of times) parents taking out bratty children who had begun to make a nuisance of themselves out of the premises until they calm down, and then they return to their seats later on.

Another question related to that. Here in Spain I've seen people leaving to buy some popcorn, or Coke, or whatever, and then return to their seats. For me, that doesn't make any sense, because you're going to miss a portion of the film, but I think this happens quite often around here. Have you noticed this happening somewhere else?

reply

I agree with you. It's a shame there's so little honesty on this website. People use it to damage the reputation of movies, directors and actors, while others use it to push porn as art, and then there are the junior high and high school kids that get on here with their lame comments about actresses, like "I bet she'd do it, huh huh." And there are the contributors to the parents guide section that have to mention each and every scene that shows a kiss, hug, bare shoulders or "bare-chested man." I think Wikipedia's movie info is better, just the movie information without the personal crap.

Under our clothes, we are all naked!

reply

No, Simon, reviews help you decide whether to spend money on a movie that's good or a movie that sucks.

reply

People leaving the showing doesn't prove anything, except that those people have a different taste in humor and this movie was not for them.
I loved this movie and liked it better than many american ''comedies'' I have seen lately. Don't believe every thing you read, go see the movie and then make your own judgement.
This movie is hilarious (and sad in some scenes) what for me, makes a perfect combination!

reply

Well to be honest the first two thirds of the movie was quite boring and mediocre. However the last third was pretty interesting and decent.

reply

Yeah, thats what I thought. In the end it's pretty amazing for a film to do that (get better towards the end), because of course usually it is the other way around with all the tricks to hook you in, then nothing but predictable laziness the further in you get.

reply

its a bit boring for the first 40 minutes but when its getting to climax, the boring mode reduce little by little. Just watch it, interesting though.

reply

Might want to factor in the intellectual capacity of people who have nothing better to do than go to the movies at 4 p.m. on a Friday.

While the movie did drag a bit in a couple of spots, it's quite hilarious overall. Those who left were probably expecting an Adam Sandler type spazzfest.

"At present nothing is possible except to extend the area of sanity little by little."

reply

What on earth can you glean about someone's intellectual capacities based on one fact: that they go to the matinee on a Friday? I think your opinion of this Simon Pegg flop/drek says more about your intellectual capacity.

reply

I am shocked anyone stayed to watch the film!!! It is one of the most boring films ever made
