The case is so unique it deserved a better movie
I've been somewhat familiar with the case of Robert Hansen and was eager to see the film. It's a bit of a shame they decided to fill the film with fictional subplots that really didn't add anything to the film. The entire part with 50 cent is pure fiction. 50 is one of the 30 producers listed so maybe he bought his role in the film. It sure didn't fit.
There are some good elements to the film. Vanessa Hudgens did a very good job in her role. They probably needed to give her a rougher look with hair and makeup. She looked a bit to clean and pretty. But her emotion was real and powerful. John Cusack was creepy as hell. His usual easy charm was nonexistent. He was meek and skittish when he needed to be and ruthless when he needed to be. Very good performances from those two.
Nick Cage, well, we was Nick Cage. He makes a lot of odd choices as an actor. Seemingly banal exposition is always an adventure with Cage. You're always aware you're watching a performance with Cage. He's not a big fan of natural acting.
The case is interesting enough without the added subplot. If they focused on the real facts there is enough drama to carry the film. Instead it dropped into silly Hollywood action tropes of a standoff of a girl with a gun to her head and the cops saying to drop the gun.
Overall, 5/10
