Not so wonderful if you have read the novels these are taken from (you cannot possibly cover even the primary points in a sixty minute show). And, as the best reviewer I have read so far on this noted, the lady who plays her is a bit clearly too old for the early twenties Phrynne is supposed to be even by the Fairies episode/novel.

Since Thorne Smith likes it ...
if it isn't funny enough have someone hit in the face with a fish.

reply

I didn't have a problem with the age until the lighting angle on some of the close-ups clearly revealed the age of the skin! Poor Essie!

reply

Miss Fisher is 27-28 in the books.

It was probably my review you read (about Essie Davis being a tad too old for the part). I was willing to ignore this as she is otherwise pretty perfect in many ways. If I wanted to carp further - she is also too tall - all the books stress how tiny Phryne is.

I wrote my review after watching a couple of eps of the first series - which at least were based (somewhat loosely) on the books. Series 2 stories are all written by someone else - and stray even further from the original premise. I cringe every time there's sexual tension between Phryne and Jack (it certainly wouldn't occur with the Jack of Kerry Greenwood's novels) - and also at errors such as reference to someone emulating Douglas Fairbanks JNR - (who was only a teenager at that time)...KG would never have made that mistake!

For the record, all of the novels are set in 1928 - and Phryne turns 30 at some stage in one of the books. So, yes it is fantasy pure and simple. I have decided to take the TV series for what it is and not let it spoil the wonderful, funny, full of yummy food novels. They are in a class all their own.

Smile - it may never happen

I suppose one advantage of being unfamiliar with the books upon which this show is based is that I've got not preconceived notions about what the characters are supposed to be like. I'm absolutely loving it. I think I'm midway through the episodes that are available on US Netflix. I came to imdb because the actress who plays Dot seems so familiar to me that I thought maybe she'd been in something else I've seen. (I have come to the conclusion, though, that she just reminds me a lot of Sophie Winkelman.)

Perhaps because I'm unfamiliar with the the books, Essie Davis doesn't seem too old for the part, to me. References have been made to the Great War being 10 years previous and she was a nurse in the War, so she would have to be in her late 20s at the youngest.

I have seen every show so far. I hoped that maybe HBO or another premium station might air the show Maybe even A&E? but no one in the us airs the show
I understand that Canada is airing it. And it is show in a number of other countries. I would hope the income from the showing of the show in other countries would pay for or reduce the cost for season 3.

We're watching Miss Fisher on Sunday evenings on PBS.

Season 1 is also available on Netflix via DVD or streaming.

reply

Are you watching SEason 2 on PBS in the US? I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and don't find it scheduled. Hope it makes its way back soon!

reply

So far it's just the first season on PBS.

I realized a long time ago that it was in the best interest of my own enjoyment to judge film and books independently. For example, I have learned that often books and T.V./movies must be paced differently. (The Lord of the Rings appendices concerning how they adapted the book REALLY taught me a lot , and I recommend them.)

reply

Actually, I started reading the books after the series started in the UK but ended up stopping as I found the series far more entertaining than the books.

However, the primary reason I stopped with the books was that I found the overall tone becoming increasingly "feminist" and while I have no issue with this, I DO have an issue with misandry, that I found the books showing more and more.

I think the leading lady is stunning, in any light but I really wish writers would come up with something better than the sad old "will they, won't they" scenario.

reply

The age of the actor / actress is total unrelated to the character they play - for example check out Abby in NCIS.

Don'[t like the acting or story - different issue - don't watch it. Petty.

reply

My mom in Virginia says they are airing them weekly where she lives. Think she's watching season 1 but I'm also not very clear on that but I've verified that the season 1 discs are available from Netflix and I think they start Nov 1.

Any other info anyone have??

reply

We just stumbled on it; Netflix recommended it. So far, so good!

I love this show. I've heard a rumor that ABC or the Australian Government or someone is NOT planning to finance a third series. Does anyone know if this is true? Seems like this happened a couple of years ago with Sea Patrol where the Australian Government financed a certain number of episodes than dropped it.

reply

Evidently it hasn't been renewed as of yet and the good people of Australia are petitioning for it to be.

reply

I had no idea it hadn't been renewed. My Mum and I are loving this show, here's hoping the illustrious ABC has the brains to fund a third and more seasons.

reply

The ABC is a non-commercial network/public broadcaster that gets taxpayer funding....but it's not like the Australian government makes decisions on the programming.

Worst. Rescue. EVER!

reply

Thanks, you're a doll. I will check it out! LOVE this show!

reply

I watched the first season on Netflix and my friend (who recommended the show to me) allowed me to watch the second season on her Roku ACORN channel because I can't afford it.

I wish we had more shows like this in the States. I love the rich variety of female characters, an amazing leading lady, the largely feminist writing, and the topics that this show brings up that often don't get focus in contemporary mainstream shows much less period dramas.

{Look at me and mah clevah nicksies.}

reply

I agree, I really enjoy this show! I've never read the books - I know I should and probably will. Essie Davie is great - and I don't care if she doesn't match perfectly to the book description :)

I would kiss you if you weren't so damn ugly.

My PBS station is skipping episodes.
