Phryne/Essie's accent

Does anyone else think Essie/Phryne's accent in Season 2 seems a bit less "Australian"/more "English"? As an American, I'm not as fined tuned to the nuances of various British accents and I don't have videos from Season 1 on hand, but I get the impression that Phyrne's native Aussie accent has been played down this time around. As a comparison, Jack's accent is much more Aussie-sounding....Or maybe it's just me and my untrained ears.

To me it sounds more like a class thing than an Aussie/British thing. Not all Aussies sound the same (especially not back in those days)...she sounds upper class and cultured - like the Lady she is.

Jack sounds pretty normal....as in, middle class and urban. Bert and Cec also have a different accent to both Jack and Phryne, because they're both working class blokes. (These days, we'd call the way they sound "occa" or 'Strine) A Lady would never speak with such an accent, especially not back in the 1920's.

Ooh, that makes more sense. I forgot about the class difference between Phyrne and Jack. Yeah, Phyrne's accent lacks the more obvious Aussie "drawl" that I guess I'm used to. To me, Jack's accent is what I'd expect to hear from an Aussie today. The distinct is far more obvious between Phyrne and Bert & Cec.

Actually from reading the books you find she was born in AU but her Dad inherited an English title so the family moved to the UK. She moved back to Australia in the first book (and the first episode of season1) but it's easy to forget when you're watching the series. The books make more mention of her time in England. I think her Essie Davis does an amazing job with that accent; mostly British but also showing her AU roots.

If you're interested, this in an interview she did on TV here about the show.

It begins about 43mins in, so you don't have to watch the whole thing. That's what she really sounds like, and it's funny because she looks like Miss Fisher with that hair

This is an ad for Cloudstreet, where she's doing an "Australian" accent (for want of a better term!).

(I was going to link to a clip of her Dolly Pickles, but people here might like to see Fish Lamb/Constable Collins as well)

my mum thought she was english, her accent isn't that typical australian accent people are used to hearing on tv

I thought she slipped up more in series 2 than series 1. All the same - love Miss Phryne Fisher!

I came to the board to see if anyone else thought the accents sounded English rather than Australian.

I'm new to the series and I love it, but I noticed that Phryne's accent drifts back and forth. . ..but I don't mind. It's a wonderful series and I'm so glad I found it!
