Why is Jack divorced?

Haven't read the books so can anyone shed some light on Jack's marital past? In the show, he used to be married to the Chief Commission's daughter. I don't remember them explaining why they got a divorce or how long it's been.

I didn't read the books, but in the series, Jack gets divorced in the first few shows. He goes away for the day to go to divorce court. The series doesn't say why they got divorced.
