why does she speak like that?!?

...It's hard to understand what she says sometimes because she doesn't open her mouth and enunciate her words clearly....there's all of this "whistling", and like she's clucking her tongue in her mouth without moving her lips!...sooo annoying!....and she's doing all of this while she's talking really fast....I love this show, but I really hate the way she speaks!!!!....

Seriously? I think she enunciates really well actually. I'm an American and I'm glad that they gave Phryne a more English rather than Australian accent. I have trouble understanding what is being spoken if the regional accent is particularly strong but thankfully, Phryne's speech is very clear, at least to me...

reply

I think just the opposite. I have noticed that compared to the others, whose lines I sometimes can't understand, she clearly enunciates and has a voice that projects and a tone that is clear as a bell.

I love her voice. Maybe she's done stage work, since those actors learn to project and enunciate.

Perhaps you have trouble generally with British accents? I have watched British shows for decades, so I'm used to it.

I think that's probably the most common complaint I've heard from people in regards to Aussie accents. So it's not just you.

I can't say it's something I've ever noticed, though.

I think she enunciates perfectly, I rarely miss a word of her dialogue, Essie really "projects" her voice very well!

That's interesting because Phryne's accent is much closer to an English accent. There's a noticeably difference between her accent and say Bert, Cec, and Jack's.

reply

She doesn't sound Australian because when her father became a baron and the family moved to England, she was sent to school to learn to be a proper young lady.

reply

She's speaking properly. People on TV - like news readers - used to speak that way too, until the last decade or two. Now they just speak the same as everyone else.

I expect she was taught how to speak that way because she was born poor, and would have had a different accent.

The Danish Princess from Tasmania doesn't speak with a regional accent either - because she went to finishing school. If you want a modern RL example.

I'm currently watching Season 2 and am noticing that Phryne has lost her clipped British-tinged accent. She sounds like a different character.
