Timing of Hugh's and Dot's wedding

I don't know if anyone else has commented on this, but there was something sad about the timing of the wedding of Hugh and Dot. In Season 3, Hugh suggests they get married at the end of September 1929 (I think it was the 28th or 29th). This was just a month before the Wall Street crash of October 24th which precipitated the Great Depression -- which in turn was apparently particularly severe in Australia. I wonder if this was a deliberate point made by the scriptwriters; I suspect it was, because Hugh actually says "Lets make it September 29th, 1929".
I wonder how Dot and Hugh made out in their married life. Of course Phryne and Jack are much more glamorous and exciting, but Dot and Hugh are more like ordinary people, and very sympathetic; their problems are the kind that often affect real people.

How did it come to this?
