Murdoch Foyle's Name

Murdoch Mysteries and Foyle's War are two of the best detective shows ever on TV.
Is this character's name an homage to them?

reply

I've never heard of those shows myself, but I always thought "Foyl" was a spelling play on "foil" since Foyl was the first season villain and was constantly foiling Phryne's attempts at getting justice for her sister. Then at the end of the season he repeatedly foiled her attempts to catch him after he escaped from prison. Similarly, I always thought of Phryne's surname to be a nod to her "fishing" for information.

You should watch Foyle and Murdoch if you have a chance. They are excellent period productions with superior writing and character portrayals.

What character? I don't recall a character named Murdoch in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.

reply

Season 1, the last 4 episodes. Phryne's arch-nemesis according to the IMDb summary, played by Nicholas Bell.

reply

Well, I don't believe in coincidence so...obviously an homage to 2 TV detectives at once!

reply

doubtful, given that the first Phryne Fisher novel predates the Murdoch Mysteries.

Question : does the character Murdoch Foyle exist in the pre-TV show books? If not, he may have been name changed or even added to the shows without being in the books. I do not currently have sufficient input to determine that.

if it isn't funny enough have someone hit in the face with a fish. Since Thorne Smith likes it ...
