Is Lin Chung actually supposed to be mixed/Eurasian?

As far as I've been able to tell, the answer is "no".

I just watched a few episodes of this show for the first time. And I'm wondering why an obviously mixed and frankly not very Asian-looking man was cast as a full-blooded (ostensibly Han as opposed to something unlikely in the context of the story such as Uyghur) Chinese, and an obviously Vietnamese actress as his "Chinese" fiancee. Was it really so hard for the producers to cast actors whose ethnicities actually matched those of the characters they were playing?

He is not mixed in the books, he is Chinese. He wasn't cast very well for his brief appearance in the show. (imho)

He's definitely full-blooded Chinese in the books but I guess the producers felt they needed someone more white-looking on TV (totally infuriating, btw...but that's a whole other discussion). Regardless, the actor isn't that good anyway and has no chemistry with Phyrne.

Let's remember that the show is filmed in AUSTRALIA and doesn't have the dearth of actors at their disposal that HollyWHAT has. Naturally, it would be easier for them to look for local talent rather than fly someone halfway round the world for just 1-2 episodes.

Wow. First of all, you apparently just take for granted (for who knows what reason) that anyone assumes the show was filmed somewhere other than Australia. And not only that, in Hollywood no less. WTF?

They wouldn't have had to "fly someone halfway around the world" just to use a fully Asian actor or even another mixed actor who actually looked more authentic. (There are plenty of hapas out there who can pass for full Asian — Philippe Day doesn't.) You seem to be under the curious impression that Asian actors are so vanishingly rare that the show's producers would have plausibly been unable to find a single qualified person in the entirety of Australia. AUSTRALIA, of all places. A country which has one of the largest Chinese populations on Earth outside of China itself, and in which the Chinese constitute the largest non-Anglo demographic. How utterly and completely absurd.

I'm open to the possibility of a reasonable explanation for their casting choice, but that is most certainly not one.

OK. You may be right. There's lots of things I don't know about. I was just offering an opinion.

Sorry to have offended you.

While you are upset at the ignorance about Australia, I am focused on something far less important: the use of the word dearth to indicate the exact opposite of its actual meaning.

doesn't have the dearth of actors at their disposal

dearth = scarcity

The context leads me to believe Janine was either 1) being facetious or 2) looking for plethora = abundance.

I agree with you, I think people are nit-picking again. However, I'll point out that you've used "dearth" backwards. What you mean to say is that Australia DOES have a dearth of actors who would fit the part, while Hollywood would supposedly have lots.

But I note a bunch of (also nit-picking) people made the exact same complaint about the casting of the now-cancelled U.S. TV show "Rush Hour" with Jon Foo, a Chinese-Irish actor. Considering the martial arts fighting requirements of the character, I thought they did a admirable job.

P.S. I also thought the person who answered you previously was very rude to you, and it was quite uncalled for. But then, that's the internet for you!
