gorgeous costumes

I'm glad an award recognized the show's attention to the period.

Oh to be wealthy in the Roaring 20s!

Phryne's clothes are beautiful! The other clothes seem authentic for the era. There must be a large budget for the show, to have clothes like that.

reply

I do love her clothes, they are so glamorous. Good that she's got the figure for them, the 20's were not good for curvy women!

You might not believe this HB but I've seen pics. of her on the RC and she's incredibly PEAR SHAPED! She should have the designer for the show do ALL her clothes… it was genuinely astonishing and proof that clothes really can make a huge difference. 

Agreed they are absolutely gorgeous

The costume designer works incredibly hard to keep the costumes true to the era. She only buys the fabrics that would have been available at the time and has to cut each one to fit as darts hadn't been invented yet. She stated in an interview that she sends the hat designs to a milliner to have each one made to spec. AND that she designed Phryney's first handbag around HER GUN! She is also very aware of the need for movement allowances in each of the garments because of everything the scripts have the actors doing.

The reason they have Essie Davis in trousers so often is because she does all her own stunt work. So she has learned to drive the Hispano, fly the planes (plural) and learned ALL the dances: Tango, "fan", Waltz, etc…

What can I say? I'm crazy for the show and read everything I can find on it! ; - )

Oh.. and you can't search eBay for "miss fishers" anything because they've only recently adopted "Downton Abbey". But I'm watching and waiting hopefully!

Netflix in the US has every episode available for streaming.

Why thank you ever so kindly! 

Fortunately, I stream XBMC (which is free if you've got a box to install it on and can then hook your box up to both cable AND the HDMI outlet of your TV). So I watch pretty much anything I want from around the world and MFMM's IS AT THE TOP OF MY LIST!!!

You no doubt know about season 4 but you might not know that 5 is also under "construction" so to speak! She's doing so well, she could be to the Aussies what Downton Abbey was to the UK! 

Which would thrill me NO END because I AWAYS LIKED HER BETTER! But then, she's so very much more fun! She's like Emma Peel meets Nick & Nora Charles! (because Nick is AWAYS so much more active than Nora is is the movie Mysteries!) Anyway, thanks again for the help and here's to another season with: Bert, Ces, Jane, "Mr & Mrs. Collins" and of course JACK AND PHRYNEY!…… forgive me Mr. B, whatever was I thinking?!

I never realised anything like an XBMC existed. I'm getting one. Thanks so much for the mention. And Netflix in the US only has three seasons available.

I'll help any way I can! It's the smartest thing I've ever done and have never regretted it. Like any other system, it's not perfect but I've seen shows from Australia (OBVIOUSLY) CA, The UK, I've even found EVERY old episode from Colombo…. no Love American Style though (although you're probably too young to remember either! And I think I can even get some Rowan & Martins Laugh In!

I've seen shows from the UK that were never offered in the US and I'm a season or 2 ahead on DCI Banks and VERA. I do have to wait until the day after a show airs in the US to see it but when I do it's commercial free!
We've also seen movies that were still in theaters…. "Mr Holmes" was a great example. I think it played even better on the small screen than it would have on a large on.

The Prime Amazon TV Box will get you some perks and it's a great price (DON'T BUY ANYTHING until I talk to a friend. Her dad does add-ons like SHOWBOX, XBMC, HBO, SHO (but you have to pay for both so I don't count them), Live streaming sports from around the world and live streaming TV shows as well. My husband is watching the current season of Game of Thrones as they air as he also is with TWD and TD. Oh yeah, he loves Survivor… so we have almost no viewing habits in common although I was surprised to see he likes "Miss Fisher"

But anyway, if you buy from Jen, her Dad will give you 90 days of FREE phone tech support WHICH IS HELPFUL BEYOND WORDS AND NO ONE ELSE WILL GIVE YOU! Plus, he's just a great, wonderful, nice, mellow guy. Think about it and let me know.

I will say that it was "the change" that I was so afraid of but 2-3 weeks after having it, I'll NEVER GO BACK!

I adore Phryne and have been watching her, in a binge, non-stop. Quite literally every day. (I also binge on Keeping up Appearances, Are You Being Served, Vicar of Dibley, etc.) I just am not fond of American television. So, I hit up the foreign market I guess.

Phryne's clothes are stunning. And it's hard to believe that her body isn't actually shaped like the clothing leads us to believe. I can see the detail not only in her clothing, down to the pleats and feathers, but also even in Dot's clothing. Just beautiful all the way around!

Of course they do . . . because Season 4 has not been broadcast yet! And Season 5, if it exists, is only just in planning stages.

reply

The fashion is amazing!!! I wonder what will happen in 1929 though. By that I mean of course what will happen to Phrynie's wardrobe. It's ~1926 in season 2, so she doesn't have many fabulous fashion years left ahead of her I'm afraid.

reply

The fashion is fabulous until the end. It was never going to make it past the twenties, though.

Worst. Rescue. EVER!

reply

if the show continues on... my guess is ignore the events of that 'Tuesday in October', and keep running any future seasons/series as being in a long as is needed 1929
- not unlike the American Series 'That 70's show'... which if I recall the show was set in 1976 at the start, ran 8 Seasons.. yet ended with New Years 1980...

reply

Wouldn't it be a great idea to work the crash into the story?

It is within her character to find and appreciate talents. Her diverse investments would help her survive, and probably help others by 'recycling' her dresses. An up-and-coming avant-garde designer could catch her attention and create dresses out of the old one-and-done's. That would have the audience look out for recognizable fabrics and patterns.

Well Season 2 Episode 8 has Mac showing a dead body, with the date of 4/18/29 so just based on that, they're showing some attention to the passage of time.

Oh they are simply lush aren't they? Phryne's clothes are gorgeous and I love the feeling the series gives you of being able to wander into the period and roll around in it.

reply

The black and white coat she wore in Sat 4/23) episode was outstanding

reply

I love the clothing as well as the background design. Furniture, rugs, cars, architecture, rooms, gardens etc... Amazing especially for a publicly produced series they can't have had that large a budget?

reply

Yes! The costumes are gorgeous and Phryne's clothes have only gotten better as the show gained popularity (which must've given the budget for them an extra boost).

Actually Essie Daivs doesn't have the board-like waif figure that was coveted in the 1920s but she does still pull the costumes off pretty well. I've noticed that they've put her in more long, drapey robe-like pieces lately. She wears trousers a lot more this season as well.

I actually think that many of her outfits in season 3 could still work in modern day!
