Why is Jack divorced?

Haven't read the books so can anyone shed some light on Jack's marital past? In the show, he used to be married to the Chief Commission's daughter. I don't remember them explaining why they got a divorce or how long it's been.

reply

They married very young (16) before the War and when he came back he was a very different man (understandably); they weren't right and didn't love one another anymore.

She moved in with her sister a while back and I believe the divorce is because of another engagement.

reply

Wow, they got married at 16? I guess back then, 16 wasn't considered too young...
It's so difficult imagining Jack as a young, carefree man. His ex-wife on the show seems like the opposite of Phryne.

reply

I believe you can still get married at 16, but you need special permission if you are under 18.

Jack is only divorced in the TV series, and that is so that there could be sexual tension between him and Phryne.

In the books he's happily married with two sons. His wife is a supportive wife who keeps a tidy, calm home where Jack can escape from his work. She doesn't get into the stories much.

Thanks for filling us in from the books. What a contrast to what they've decided to do on the show!

In the show, his wife left him because she thought he wasn't ambitious enough. She wanted him to be like her father.
