Some questions if anyone can help. Is Mr. Butler's last name really Butler or is calling him "Mr. Butler" some kind of sign of respect? Does anyone know the how/where story about those amazing cars? Same question re the clothing? Thanks

I think it is the collective consensus and acknowledgment by his associates of Butler's questionable past that they do not wish to address further. He is now and will be on their side fighting the good fight. So he gets the honorific and a name befits his duties and services.
His back story is certainly worth a look, just like the story arc given to Phrynne's dad.

I have not seen enough episodes to speak to this instance and the original answerer's response sounds reasonable.
I did want to add that many European last names started as jobs, because only the rich had surnames. So the difference between two Johns in the village (no double entendre intended) was that one was John the blacksmith and the other was John the barber. In the US, slaves didn't have surnames. After emancipation, some took their previous owner's surname, or the plantation name. Others took the names of Presidents they admired, thus the plethora of African American Washingtons and Lincolns. I don't know how others chose... perhaps some by their trade skills (back to blacksmith and barber).

I am actually out of the consensus that believes Mr. Butler's name is an honorific. As I recall, he has worked in service for a number of years (some of them spent in the armed forces as a "butler" of sorts to a C.O) and his last name actually is in fact "Butler". I believe it's just another example of the show throwing out oddities and eccentricities just to keep us smiling and on our toes.
All of the vehicles: the Hispano, the "Cab" Phryney bought Bert & Ces along with the planes, other autos and motorbikes are authentic to the period and for what it may be worth, Essie Davis who plays Miss Fisher has learned to ride/fly/drive EVERY vehicle you see her in which are ALL restored and period authentic. Something the show prides itself on.
The clothing designer buys ONLY period fabrics and makes and cuts patterns/fabrics for the individual actors as darts had not been invented yet which makes fit an enormous issue. She also designs the hats herself but sends them to a Milliner (hat designer/maker… the great fashion designer Halston actually got HIS start in hats!) to have them made, again with period fabric. Miss Fisher is often in trousers because she's such an active character whereas Dot is in plainer and more common (for women) dresses. One little tidbit about the wardrobe is that the designer makes Phryney's purses TO FIT HER GUN! Which I absolutely adore. What a place to start and what a way to have "form following function"
And yes, it's quite true I'm clearly nutso-crazy for the show and YES, have gone so far as to search for "Miss Fisher" hats and or clothing on eBay… which has only gotten up as far as Downton Abbey much to my chagrin.

Is this a duplicate post? I really thought for sure I had read this somewhere else. In fact, I may have even commented, because I am fascinated with Phryne's costumes and the incredible attention to detail that is given every single costume, not just Essie's.
I don't know if it's just the HD but I swear you can see the bias and thread count, it's just so amazing. The sheer drapery of the fabrics, the pleats and falls. Breathtaking.

You may have watched the behind the scenes American special that accompanied the season three premier, titled Miss Fisher Uncovered, which went into some detail on the wardrobe department, vehicles, sets, props, interviews with cast and crew etc.

I actually wish that I could see a Behind the Scenes for Miss Fisher. I'm so fascinated with this series and of course, the costumes. I only know what I've read here on imdb about the show and the costumes. I didn't know there was any other published info.
