Will she go to jail?

Following the horriic 'surgey'will her mother call the police-or hide the bodies?

reply

Now that is a good question. I can't say either way. Throughout the movie the mother didn't seem to care at all about her. From that i would say she would call the cops. But the last scene of her hugging her daughter makes me feel otherwise. She is devastated but she knows that her daughter is very mentally ill. I'm not sure what she'd do.

reply

I figured that the hug was because this was now her last remaining child, while the scream was because she was angry with her and because her last remaining child is going to prison for murder. She's conflicted, but I don't think she'll cover it up.

I never got that she didn't seem to care about her. Throughout the movie she tries to be involved in her life, but Pauline don't really make it easy.
They were just about to make some financial plans to get her to a real psychiatrist after all.

She's completely detached from reality by the close of the movie. Nut house obviously.

Brilliant! Hahaha!

She did love her daughter, maybe too much as I think she saw herself in Pauline and said as much in the scenes where she talks about the mother and they way she keeps trying and how she still tells she loves her despite her antagonism.
Also now that Grace is dead (who sadly would have died anyway prematurely) she only has one child left and a dysfunctional marriage so it is likely she will try to save her but as Pauline is clearly crazy she would need real care so it would be the hospital etc. she would call / contact. She will not hide the daughter but maybe the neighbor while in a state of panic? The mother is also mentally ill possibly due to her mothers treatment so literally anything could happen but the father is grounded enough to call the cops but then he would walk away from them both and possibly even commit suicide from depression.
The film is about different forms of illness from physical to mental health they are all struggling with something but ignoring it to a greater or lesser extent and it is this which eventually causes the family to unravel.
I feel very sorry for Pauline as with a little help it could have been avoided and she really could have gone on to be someone in a medical capacity rather than someone who will be a medical curiosity.

At some point Traci Lords says (shouts) "I've tried but it is imposible to love her" or something similar to her husband, while Pauline is crying listening outside of the room.
I don't think she cares about Pauline. When she arrives home at the end she's only looking for Grace. She may love Pauline in the wrong way, not in the way Pauline needs to be loved. That's in my opinion the main reason for Pauline to be mentaly unbalanced.
Traci Lords goes over Grace to help her the minute she notices that something is wrong with her. Pauline is treated as she is always abusing the reality. Is more a story of the search for approval. The illness is more an excuse to care about one more than the other. The illness Grace has is an excuse to approve her and the illness Pauline has (mental) is an excuse to disapprove her.

With this in mind, Pauline think that if she performs surgery to her sister she will get the approvation from her parents, plus more atention because of her sisters good health.

But, this is only what I think and what I got out of it on first viewing. I'd love to watch the movie again and go deeper. Probably I'm thinking too fast and leaving info out that could make your argue more plausible, or maybe not.

UPDATE: By the way... To me, the very end is the moment Traci Lords finally knows that Pauline is really ill and that she needed her.

She'll likely call the police. The crime will be hard to cover up as there are two victims involved (one whom visited the house in broad daylight) and police look to the parents first when a child goes missing. I don't see her going to jail though; she's very delusional and I believe she's a minor. She'll likely go to a mental hospital.

Pauline says she's 18. Last time I checked, that's legal.

But yeah, she'll probably go to the peanut gallery.

Not sure what she might do, but Traci Lords acted the *beep* out of this scene, showing both anguish for Grace and a love and worry for Pauline, and I think you see that in Annalynne McCord's face, too. Craaaa-zyyyy!

I think its mental asylum. I think the mom will proabably blame herself for a lot of it cause the girl said she needed a proper psychiatrist and she knows she struggled to love her. On that point i dont think the mother hated her but it would be difficult to love your child who is pretty hard going like Pauline was.

Some sort of mental lockup to start for sure, but once she is placed under observation and actually sees people trained in diagnosing people with her disorder (whatever it is) she will receive treatment and the appropriate drug regime. At some point, she could be 'cured' and released.

For instance, you may have heard about the fellow who decapitated a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus some years ago? He received treatment for his mental problems and is now getting day passes.
