What made Joan so sure Geraldine Page would win the Oscar? Did I miss something ?

I don't know. I guess maybe she just had a hunch. Notice she hedged her bet by contacting more than one actress.

Makes me wonder. What if Geraldine Page didn't win?

That's why she contacted Anne Bancroft who did win for The Miracle Worker.

It's hard to compare the Geraldine Page's performance in Sweet Bird of Youth to Anne Bancroft's in the Miracle Worker. Anne's role was heroic and uplifting. Geraldine Page played a washed up has-been actress. Viewed side by side, I do think Geraldine Page gave a better performance than Anne Bancroft.

The comparative virtue of the characters played by the two actresses is irrelevant. The contest is to reward the best actress, not the nicest character.
