She's great. Also TONS of screen time with the better known actresses. Great character role!!

i agree

She's getting all the best lines, that's for sure!

Excellent writing there, while everyone else is a whirlwind of ego or insanity or ambition or pickled like a herring, there's got to be one truthful, sensible character. And they made her hilarious!

I totally agree. But I have one question: by her accent (and periodic references to Hitler and Austria) she is obviously German or Austrian. So why is her name Mamacita? That sounds Hispanic.

Crawford actually explained it in her immortal book,"My Way of Life", her envy-my-lifestyle book from the early sixties (bitch was ahead of her time). Mamacita was German, but when she was hired Crawford had just returned from a tour of a spanish-speaking country, and had developed the habit of addressing women as "Mamacita".

So yes, Crawford spent another fifteen years calling a German woman "Mamacita".

Aha! Thanks for that tidbit of knowledge. 😎

Like when Joan alluded to something (in Hollywood) that happened in 1937 and Mamacita said "Ven Hitler took Austria?"

She's great, I love her too. She's like the Thelma Ritter of the piece, she can say the truth when others can't for propriety's sake.

reply

You nailed it, just like Thelma Ritter. Very clever woman who chose to educate herself when Joan was too drunk (and keep the children away from that show). She might have earned a degree or two...
Her thoughts about women directors are clever too.

reply

Agreed. Great part and performed extremely well.
