Loved it my take if anyone cares

Great action and humor throughout plus it had a lot of heart. The ending was awesome, and I enjoyed both credit scenes one for its set-up for the future of Marvel and the other was just funny. Plus, the cameo was hilarious. I loved the action and the fighting. Also it was great that we had some strong villains in this one and they well mainly Kurse posed a physical challenge to Thor. It was great seeing more of the 9 realms as well. I would rate this a solid 8/10. Also it was awesome there was so many clues to the future of the MCU and of the future of the Thor movies as well.

I would have to agree that not only does this film entertain but it sets up so much more as well.

reply

haha thank you, I'm glad you agree.

I loved everything you mentioned and more. The actors clearly had fun with this one and the rivalry between Thor and Loki was nevermore played so great than this. I LOVED the cameo you mentioned. That is the one scene that I had a huge grin on my face. I wish it had been longer, but I presume it would have lessened the impact of it. Eccleston was excellent as Malikith. I thought the character was more than menacing, he was clearly pure evil. I was so sad with Frigga's death...that scene was well played and her funeral had me with a tear or two. I also loved The Warrior Three. I'd have to say that overall, I'd rate this 10/10 as it fulfilled everything I wanted and expected after the end of "The Avengers." I also thought Stellan Skarsgård was so funny. Obviously his nudity in this was competing with Alexander's from "True Blood" and the full frontal of the season finale.

The funeral scene was done very well, I don't know if you watch Game of Thrones but it was very similar to something he did in that as well.

That's the bottom line for me as well. This movie was just as cool even though it didn't have "the entire gang" like Avengers. It feels very fresh and it's very exciting. Marvel hasn't just tried to copy what made Avengers work. They are advancing the characters and giving us something fresh. How many other franchises do that?

None that I know of. Episodes 1-3 of "Star Wars" was a true disappointment and I can say I'm underwhelmed with the "Star Trek" reboot. The only thing I can say I like to about the latter are Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and John Cho. The rest is easily forgettable.

The entirety of what started with "Iron Man" through to the release of "Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier" next April has been nothing short of exhilarating and exciting to experience and anticipate. I cannot say how much I'm looking forward to "Cap 2" next year, then "The Avengers 2" in 2015. I don't think I've been this anticipatory of any franchise in a long time, though I am looking forward to the sequel to "Prometheus."

That's a huge understatement. It's so good to see Natalie Portman get redemption for that mess with these two Thor films. Her face was even in Avengers for two seconds.

Sing it! That whole 'Amadala' mess was just like watching the toddler version of what was supposed to be a great, sweeping epic. I'm so happy for all the success of Jane Foster.

reply

Yup, the Jane character redeemed herself in the latter part of the movie. The final battle with her, Dr. Selvig and Thor against the elves was great. Darcy and the intern were good, too. So much that I wouldn't mind seeing Jane and co. talk science with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner in a future film. I'd also like to see her interact with Black Widow- I know the actresses are friends irl and it would be great to see them team up together.

reply

Jane not only redeemed Thor's choice but she proved she has heart and grit.

reply

Funny, one of the best parts of the Star Trek reboot, is the opening sequence, which stars Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk, Jim's father. A very moving and emotional opener.

reply

Agreed. Beginning of Star Trek 2009 was Epic.

reply

He had star written all over him.

reply

It feels very fresh? It advances the characters? How?! In what way?! The biggest flaw of the movie is that it does nothing with the characters.

Explain to me how Thor has fundamentally changed as a person from the beginning of the movie to the end. Or Loki. Or Jane. Or anybody. I can do that with any of the other Marvel films, not this one.

As a Marvel nerd, I get that the movie can be enjoyable - the novelty of seeing unbastardized superhero movies still hasn't worn off. These are characters who have been in other (better) movies - it's nice to see them again. The art direction is really cool. It's in no way Batman & Robin levels of bad, it just isn't very good.

One aspect to one character when it comes to character development.

In the original Thor, Thor's character is more straight warrior and yes he learns humility and responsibility in that movie.

In Thor 2 we see that there is a lot more to him, he has brains and strategies. Previously he seemed a bit of a 'meathead', but here he leads armies into battle, tricks his brother and lies to him when necessary, not to mention plans out the taking out the ship from Asgard as a decoy.

He also sees that the one thing he wanted previously was to rule Asgard, but realises that in order for that to happen he could end up just as ruthless as his father or Loki. This is when he sees the scarifices to his own people that Odin is prepared to make in the name of war, and how is that different to Loki's crimes. "I would rather be a good man, than a great ruler."

None of that is in the movie, you're reading into it.

We don't see Thor leading armies into battle. We see him appear and hit the big rock man. That's an action beat. If you want to fill in the gaps and imagine that Thor was instrumental in planning the offense or something that's fine, but we do not see any such thing in the actual movie.

Same goes for tricking Loki - nothing about the trick came from character attributes of Thor, it was just 'character A pulls the rug from under character B'.

Ditto with taking the ship. There was nothing about that sequence that showed Thor being a canny leader or strategist. In fact, the movie is so slapdash with these sorts of things that maybe the first interaction between Thor and Loki when they board the ship is

Loki: I thought you said you knew how to fly this thing.

Thor: I said 'how hard could it be?'

Personally I think that's just lazy, cliche writing. But if you take it at face value then Thor's plan sucked.

reply

The cameo was one of the best parts of the film, but it's Loki that makes this franchise work. His character is a joy to watch.

So true, but the chemistry between Tom and Chris is just sooooo good :)

You have been watching the Loki trilogy (of sorts) Empire magazine.

Most people loved this endeavor. And that we all care about or else why would we be posting here!

reply

I have to say my favorite part of both mid/post credit scene's was the little (or should I say not so little) critter chasing the pigeons. I really hope Coulson and his team have to round the little guy up.

reply

Hey look here! Apparently it's over a month later and we all still care very much!

reply

I still love this movie also!

I liked the action scenes, some of the comedy, great character moments, and the look of everything, but there wasn't much of an actual story or character arc for anyone besides stopping the bad guy. There were several interesting ideas they could have used, like the concept of legacies and responsibilities, but they just sort of glossed over everything.
