how did she get the connection to the song?

When Dave tells her he wrote a song foe her he puts on a song he wrote. He looks guilty an she just slaps him. Switches the song off and says "who was it for?" With absolutely no connection in the lyrics to another woman.

? it was meant for her he says. She gets physco and then he gives her up that "mim" immediately.

Did I miss something? Or did she just read his mind.

If I remember correctly, the dialogue goes like this:

Dave: "I wrote a new song."
Gretta: "Did you?"
Dave: "Yeah, I was inspired in L.A...wanna hear it?"
Gretta: "Wow, yeah, I'd be very interested"

So the dialogue never implied the song was for Gretta.

Now as for the lyrics:

I don't know if I'm the fool who's getting this all wrong
That's the dream to sing, the perfect girl, the perfect song
All I know is I can't keep on wearing this disguise
When you're the only one who sees what's real in my eyes
You take me to another space in time
You take me to a higher place
So I- I'm about to get out of the race
I don't mind
You ought to know that everything's nothing If I don't have you

I found the lyrics to be pretty clear. "Can't keep wearing this disguise" "you're the only one that sees what's real in my eyes"

Dave was anxious to show off his new song, but was visibly uncomfortable concerning his infidelity. He didn't think Gretta would catch on, but she did. Why would he be inspired in LA to write a song about some girl if Gretta was back in New York the whole time? The way I see it, Gretta put two and two together and realized Dave had cheated.

reply

Yup, he didn't think she'd catch on either. When he walked back into the room he said "you're a *beep* mind reader."

reply

I think it was simply a confession. He didn't know how to tell her, so he played her the song. Perhaps he partly hoped she wouldn't get it - to avoid the fallout of the confession - but partly hoped she would, so that he could deal with the consequences and move on. A complicated situation. It was a contrived song to fit the story line, but this is a story about musicians and music, so it fits.

Call it female intuition but I knew he had cheated too as soon as the song started playing. The song felt inspired by something fresh and new, possibly a new relationship, a new love, and since it was written in LA, and Greta had been in New York, you knew she wasn't the catalyst.

To be honest, I rewinded this part because I also thought I missed something. The second time I watched it, I was convinced that it has nothing to do with the lyrics, and everything to do with his facial expression. Gretta was enjoying that jam until she started noticing how evasive his eyes were. But yeah it still is a major risky bet to make in real life. I wouldn't recommend slapping your partner just because you "see" in their eye movements that they cheated. LOL

reply

Agreed.

It's not the lyrics themselves, but the fact that he does not look at HER while they are playing.

reply

I think it was the song itself, along with his eyes avoiding her.

This movie was very musically oriented. Music was so very personal to the musicians, that she was just able to tell.

His face was such a giveaway that I thought for a second he was purposefully confessing through the song because he was too chicken to straight up tell her.

reply

You might be right when thinking about it. Gretta also seems to be confused when she hears the lyrics about the disguise, she then looks up on him and he can't face to look her in the eyes. She tries again seeking eye contact, but he keeps looking down, and when she sees that, she's absolutely certain that the song was not about her, and that he had cheated on her.

What a really stupid idea to even ask her to listen - if it's not as you say - a sort of confession. And edit; I just watched the clip, and it's such a terrible song... on top of everything, ugh.

reply

It was super obvious. I saw it coming a mile away. Could see it in his face, the guilt, worry etc. The lyrics also... It clearly wasn't about her. I'm not too sure as other have said that he thought she wouldn't catch on. It might have been somewhat of a confession. She was going to hear the song at some point, and he did want to follow through with the other girl. So no point in beating around the bush.
