Maybe this is what is bothering me. I admit to not being a fan of Kiera Knightly; I can take her of leave her in most of her movies. But this time, she left a huge drab hole in the middle of this film for me. It's almost as if I could see her acting instead of believing in her character enough to not notice. It makes me wonder if she believed in her character because she didn't seem to inhabit it like the rest of the cast did theirs. Her voice is thin, she doesn't look like she's really playing, she doesn't look like a musician does when holding their instrument. It becomes a part of them. And in so many scenes, it felt as if whomever she was with in the scene carried her along. It looked like heavy lifting, especially with Mark Ruffalo. Even James Corbin seemed to be working hard to make something of her character.
The movie had so much potential - Mark Ruffalo, the script, the music. But the composition of the whole was thrown off by this big drab spot in the middle, almost like a beautiful painting with an unfinished middle.
I just felt... off.
