Most people here got the last scene wrong (I think)

I've been reading a bunch of threads here that say the last scene means Greta had wanted to get back together with Dave but when she hears the song being butchered she changed her mind.

That makes no sense given the evidence in the scene. The arrangement sung by Dave on stage is actually a lot more barebones than the one Greta had heard before, which means he had listened to her advice and did the song more like a ballad. She didn't want to go at first because seeing him still cause her pain, but she went anyway.

When she saw him performing, she smiled because 1) she could see that he's really successful and he's happy for him and 2) she realized she didn't love him anymore and she's okay with that. This allows her to truly "begin again." This is what the last scene mean IMO.

I completely agree with you. I don't think Greta had any plans to get back together with Dave despite his taking her advice on performing the song. I think he had hurt her too much and she realized just how different their paths/desires were. IMO, in that scene she was saying goodbye/getting closure and as you so aptly put, allowing herself to "begin again."

I think your both right on that, but also showed dave is fully immersed in the pop world.. he shifted to the poppier arrangment towards the end/chorus.
but yeah, she never intended to get back together

I think she saw his love affair with the audience and realized there would never be enough room for her in his life anymore (which was also what the Mark Ruffalo guy implied earlier)

Yes, it was to do with what ruffalo's character said earlier. That he's in love with his audience and he'd never be able to satisfy the requirements of a one girl relationship again. When he starts the song he's singing it how Gretta wanted it, the original delivery, but as it gets going it picks up and goes to the over blown version, especially when he takes his eyes off Gretta and looks at the fans in front and plays to them instead of Gretta. Gretta knows it's never going back to how it was at that moment, if she was undecided that clinched it.

Agree with all of this. I wonder if Dave knew Gretta had decided they were done when she refused to come on stage when he coaxed her to come on with the nod, so he goes right back to the pop version. I think it's more likely he went back to the pop one she hated because he felt too confident that she was in his pocket by showing up. He didn't need to keep doing what she liked because he got what he wanted.

I also didnt buy the comments saying it was because Greta didnt like Dave's rendition of Lost Stars or because she thought he was a sell out.

Greta felt that things have completely, absolutely changed and they can't be the way they were ever.
Too late for Dave.

I've seen comments not liking Adam Levine's performance in this but I thought he did good, and was totally moved on that subtle moment of expression when he saw Greta had left.

it was a creativity based movie.
Embracing the joy of creative endeavor while shoehorning relationships and real life into it.
One of the better renditions of how creativity happens. The scene in the bar where he 'produces' all the pieces of the song into a cold raw performance of the song was pretty great.

Yes! This is the main reason I love the movie. I love seeing creativity on display in movies whether it's music, art, etc. I think Ruffalo was amazing. That scene in the bar you cite was super along with all the other ones where he's producing and getting the biggest kick out of doing it. It was fun to watch him.

I saw this movie in the theater three times when it was released in summer 2014. It left a huge impression on me and helped me through a tough time.
