I thought it was poorly done

IMO the film was poorly written, poorly directed, some weak acting, strained performances, and often had a low-budget/amateurish feel. I seem to be in the minority though, as most posters seemed to like the film.

I totally agree. Kiera Knightly was fine, however Mark Ruffalo was not good. I liked the idea though.

Ruffalo wasn't good? What is your definition of good then?

reply

Ruffalo was incredible on this. Should have got an Oscar nom

reply

Just like Ruffalo should have gotten a nomination for You Can Count On Me!

reply

How many movies have you made?

reply

A-list stars like Ruffalo work on big budget films like Avengers to keep their agent, family and accountant happy. But it frees them to pick and choose the small budget films like this one with scripts they like. I think that's why this film exists whether you like it or not!

John Carney specialises in low-budget indie films with underlying musical themes. He doesn't work in the studio system, but in fact this film had quite a large budget by his standards.

... some weak acting ...
OMG! Some terrific acting IMO!🐭

I loved this film and have seen it 3 times. I find the story line to be amazing in that it fulfills some dreams I have. The soundtrack is terrific, especially with the way the album was made in the various locations. I wanted to be with them to be a part of this cool experience. I will probably see it again. There is complexity in some of the characters which I found attractive. This is must see viewing for music lovers as well as lovers!

You had me at I thought.....

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

It definitely had some uncomfortably weak scenes like when he got fired. Felt a little bit like an amateur vaudeville acting class and definitely not an Oscar nod performance.

reply

Yeah, I think you're wrong. If you deconstruct the movie in to a series of clichés and analysis them scene by scene then some may appear weak. But as a film, as straightforward storytelling, I think it's pretty good.

It was more raw, in general. But, still had lots of great images. Some of it had that camcorder feel, since they shot it with the RED cameras available at the time. But, there are still lots of good looks on the film.

They also shot this for $8 million in New York City. Not that easy to pull off.
